Nato nel 1957 ad Oslo, agente di borsa, è il primo dei World Grand Master norvegesi nella classifica WBF dei migliori giocatori in vita ed è anche uno dei migliori giocatori del mondo.
Helness ha vinto gli Europei Juniores a Squadre di Tel Aviv nel 1980, una decina di titoli nazionali ed è stato un componente abituale delle Squadre con le quali il suo Paese si è messo in luce a livello mondiale.
Secondo nella Bermuda Bowl di Santiago del Cile nel 1993 ed in quella di Parigi nel 2001 e terzo in quella di Hammamet nel 1997 e nelle Olimpiadi del 2008, Tor ha coronato l'inseguimento all'oro, vincendo la Coppa a Shanghai nel 2007.
Tor ha anche vinto i Nordic Teams nel 1980 e 1982 ed è arrivato terzo agli Europei Open di Mentone nel 1993, di Montecatini nel 1997, di Malta nel 1999 e secondo in quelli di Tenerife nel 2001.
Infine, nel 2006 a Verona ha conquistato la prestigiosa Rosenblum Cup.
Tor in coppia con Geir Helhgemo ha vinto 3 volte la Cap Gemini (1994, 1996, 2002), 2 volte il Jacoby Trophy (2005 e 2010), mentre in coppia con la moglie Gunn ha vinto un doppio oro negli Europei del 2005 sia nello Squadre Miste che nel Coppie Miste.
Nel 2008 ha contribuito a riportare la Warren Buffet Cup al di qua dell'Oceano ed ha trionfato nel Master Individual Open di Pechino.
Nel 2009 ha vinto il Transnational di San Paolo e nel 2010 il John Roberts Teams (ex Cavendish).
Nel 2012 prenderà la cittadinanza di Monaco e difenderà i colori del Principato con lo Zimmermann Team che al suo esordio ha vinto la Spingold del 2011.

Second in the Bermuda Bowl in 1993 and in 2001, third in in 1997 and in the Olympiad in 2008, Tor earned world gold medal, winning the Bermuda Bowl in Shanghai in 2007.
Tor has won the Nordic Teams in 1980 and 1982 and finished third at the European Open in Menton in 1993, in Montecatini in 1997, Malta in 1999 and second in Tenerife in 2001.
Finally, in 2006 in Verona won the prestigious Rosenblum Cup.
