Tor Helness è nato il 25 luglio del 1957 a Bodø una cittadina rivierasca posta poco al disopra del circolo polare artico ed è un agente di borsa, un World Grand Master, nonché, uno dei migliori giocatori del mondo.
Helness si è messo in mostra vincendo nel 1980 sia gli Europei Juniores a Squadre che il bronzo alle Olimpiadi a Squadre Open.
Vincitore di diversi titoli nazionali è stato un componente abituale delle squadre con le quali il suo Paese si è messo in luce a livello mondiale.
Secondo nelle Bermuda Bowl del 1993, 2001 e 2013 e terzo in quella di Hammamet nel 1997 e nelle Olimpiadi del 2008, Tor ha coronato l'inseguimento all'oro, vincendo l'edizione di Shanghai nel 2007.
Tra l'altro, ha vinto i Nordic Teams nel 1980 e 1982 ed è arrivato terzo agli Europei Open di Mentone nel 1993, di Montecatini nel 1997, di Malta nel 1999 e secondo in quelli di Tenerife nel 2001.
Infine, nel 2006 a Verona ha conquistato la prestigiosa Rosenblum Cup.
In coppia con Geir Helgemo ha vinto 3 volte la Cap Gemini (1994, 1996, 2002), 2 volte il Jacoby Trophy (2005 e 2010), mentre, in coppia con la moglie Gunn che gli ha dato tre figli, ha vinto un doppio oro negli Europei del 2005 sia nello Squadre Miste che nel Coppie Miste.
Nel 2008 ha contribuito a riportare la Warren Buffet Cup al di qua dell'Oceano ed ha trionfato nel Master Individual Open di Pechino.
Nel 2009 ha vinto il World Transnational di San Paolo e nel 2010 e 2012 il John Roberts Teams (ex Cavendish).
Nel 2012 ha preso la cittadinanza di Monaco e ha iniziato a difendere i colori del Principato vincendo subito il Campionato Europeo a Squadre Open con lo Zimmermann Team con cui ha anche vinto le Spingold del 2011, 2012 e 2018 e le Reisinger del 2012 e del 2013.
Nel 2012 guadagna il bronzo nell'Olimpiade di Lille. L'anno successivo arriva l'argento nella Bermuda Bowl e nell'Individuale Open dei World Mind Games nonché l'oro nell'Open a Squadre della stessa competizione.
Nel 2014 agguanta l'argento ai Campionati Europei a Squadre
, l'argento nell'Individuale ai Giochi della Mente nonché il bronzo nei World Pairs Mind Games.Nel 2015 diviene Campione a Squadre di Francia e vince il Transnational Open Teams.
Nel 2016 arriva la vittoria nei Giochi Invernali Europei , nella Champion Cup e l'argento nelle Olimpiadi.
Nel 2018 vince nuovamente sia la Spingold che la Rosenblum e nel 2022 guadagna il bronzo nella Bermuda Bowl.
Tor Helness was born on 25 July 1957 in Bodø a coastal town
located just above the Arctic Circle and is a stockbroker, a World Grand Master,
and one of the best players in the world.
Helness showed off winning in 1980 both the Junior Team and the Bronze medals at the Open Squad Olympics.
Winner of several national titles, he has been a regular member of the teams with which his country has emerged worldwide.
Second in the Bermuda Bowl of 1993, 2001 and 2013 and third in Hammamet in 1997 and in the 2008 Olympics, Tor crowned the pursuit of gold, winning the Shanghai edition in 2007.Tor has won the Nordic Teams in 1980 and 1982 and finished third at the European Open in Menton in 1993, in Montecatini in 1997, Malta in 1999 and second in Tenerife in 2001.
Finally, in 2006 in Verona won the prestigious Rosenblum Cup.
Tor paired with Geir Helgemo won 3 times the Cap Gemini (1994, 1996, 2002), 2 times the Jacoby Trophy (2005 and 2010), while, paired with his wife Gunn, who gave him three children, won a double gold in the 2005 European Mixed Pairs and Teams.

In 2009 he won the World Transnational's Teams of St. Paul and in 2010 and 2012 the John Roberts Teams (formerly Cavendish).
In 2012 he took the citizenship of Monaco and began to defend the colors of the Principality by winning the European Championships in the Open Teams, his second Spingold and first Reisinger. In the same year earned the bronze medal at the Olympiads of Lille, while, the following year, earned the silver medal in the Bermuda Bowl and in the Open Individuals at World Mind Games, as well as he won the Reisinger Cup and earned the gold medal in the Open Teams at World Mind Games.
Last prestigious success is the silver earned at 2014 European Open Teams, the gold in Individual World Mind Games and the bronze in World Pairs Game.
In 2015 he becomes National Champion for France Teams and won the Transnational Open Teams.
In 2016 arrive the victory in the European Winter Games, in the Champion Cup and the silver in the Olympiad.
In 2018 he won newly the Spingold and the Rosenblum and in 2022 he earned the bronze medal in Bermuda Bowl.
