Il primo Campionato Europeo a squadre fu disputato nel 1932 in assenza di una
Federazione Europea mentre i successivi 7 si svolsero sotto gli auspici della
International Bridge League che
prese vita proprio durante lo svolgimento del primo Campionato e che nel 1958 si
trasformò nella
World
Bridge Federation.
In particolare, al Campionato del 1937 che si disputò a Budapest, partecipò il Team Culbertson in rappresentanza degli USA, così che il Campionato ebbe contemporaneamente valore di Campionato Europeo e di Campionato Mondiale.
Dal 1940 al 1947 i Campionati si interruppero a causa del conflitto mondiale.
A partire dal 1948 i Campionati furono organizzati sotto l'egida della appena ricostituita Federazione Europea.
Dal 1960 fu deciso che i Campionati Europei non si sarebbero disputati negli anni olimpici per evitare la concomitanza con questa manifestazione.
Dal 1975 si decise che i Campionati si sarebbero disputati solo negli anni dispari.
Durante i Campionato di Tenerife del 2001, l'Assemblea Generale ed il Comitato Esecutivo della Federazione Europea hanno deciso la ristrutturazione dei Campionati Europei in due categorie: European Teams Championships e European Open Championships.
Gli European Teams Championships si sarebbero svolti negli anni pari a partire dal 2002 rappresentando la ideale prosecuzione di quelli precedenti e avrebbero assegnato la palma di miglior squadra d'Europa per il biennio a seguire.
Ad essi può partecipare una sola Squadra in rappresentanza ufficiale del proprio Paese per ognuna delle 3 Categorie ammesse (Open, Femminili, Seniores), le Squadre vincitrici delle Categorie Open e Femminili, acquisiscono il diritto di partecipare alla Bermuda Bowl e alla Venice Cup.
La formula prevede che ogni Squadra Nazionale incontri tutte le altre partecipanti, e che al termine degli incontri (round-robin) la Squadra che ha guadagnato più punti, sia dichiarata Campione d'Europa.
L'indiscusso asso dei campionati è il compianto Giorgio Belladonna che è riuscito nell'incredibile impresa di conquistare tra il 1956 ed il 1979 per ben 10 volte la medaglia d'oro.
Diverse donne hanno partecipato ai Campionati nella Categoria Open ma solo due di esse sono riuscite a salire sul podio come giocatrici, si tratta dell'inglese Dimmie Fleming nel 1953 e della danese Dorthe Schaltz nel 1993. Entrambe hanno conquistato l'argento.
Nell'edizione del 2010, a causa della numerosità delle Squadre partecipanti, è stato necessario dividere le contendenti in due Gironi Round Robin riservando il diritto alla disputa del titolo alle prime 9 di ogni Girone che hanno composto un secondo Round Robin al termine del quale è stato deciso il podio.
The European Team Championships address all European
countries who are invited to participate with their representative
(national) team.
The format of the championships is a round-robin, whereby each participating team meets every other team in a head-to-head match. There are no qualifying and final stages; at the end of the round-robin, the team with most points is the tournament winner, and the country it represents is crowned 'European Champion' for the particular year.
The European Team Championships were the first international competition to be established in Europe. It was launched in 1932 in Scheveningen, The Netherlands, and was conducted under the auspices of the International Bridge League (IBL), the forerunner of the World Bridge Federation. The IBF organized all prewar European championships. The competition ceased during the war, and was re-established in 1948, under the European Bridge League (EBL) which had replaced IBL in the mean time. All European championships ever since have been conducted by the EBL.
Originally established as an annual event played in one series only (open, i.e. allowing teams of any composition), the European Team Championships had a women series added in 1935. To support the World Team Olympiad, in 1960 it was decided not to hold European Team Championships in the leap years. In 1975, the competition became biennial, held every odd-numbered year. Later on (1995), a senior series was introduced, for players of 55 years or older. Finally, the European Team Championship was moved to even-numbered years as from 2002, to make room for the new competition, the European Open Championships.
The European Team Championships also act as the qualifier for the World (Zonal) Team Championships (Bermuda Bowl and Venice Cup), whereby the top teams in the open and women series qualify to represent Europe in the interzonal team competition.
Giorgio Belladonna is the undisputed ace of championships, which has managed the incredible enterprise to capture between 1956 and 1979: 10 times the gold medal.
Several women took part in the Championships in the Open category, but only two of them managed to get on the podium as the players: English Dimmie Fleming in 1953 and Denmark's Dorthe Schaltz in 1993. Both have won the silver medal.
In the edition of 2010, due to the abundance of teams participating, it was necessary to divide the contestants into two Pools Round Robin reserving the right to dispute the title to the first 9 in each group who have made a second round robin, after which it is been decided on the podium.
