Zia  MAHMOOD

Zia Mahmood è nato a Karachi in Pakistan il 7 gennaio del 1946 ma ha vissuto la sua gioventù in Inghilterra dove si erano trasferiti i suoi genitori che invano hanno cercato di farlo studiare e giocare al cricket.

 A soli 19 anni, ha lasciato la campagna inglese per trasferirsi a Londra dove è rapidamente divenuto un abile croupier in una casa da gioco clandestina e dove conobbe il bridge per amore di una ragazza che non poteva uscire ma che frequentava con i suoi un circolo di Bridge.

 Rimasto orfano di madre a soli 21 anni, si trasferì in Pakistan per occuparsi assieme al fratello Ali della casa editrice di famiglia e dovette anche preoccuparsi di far uscire di prigione il fratello che vi era finito per motivi politici.

 Lasciato il Pakistan i fratelli Mahmood si trasferirono ad Abu Dhabi dove si improvvisarono impresari edili avendo molta fortuna.

 Ma tra Zia ed il lavoro c'era sempre stata un'incompatibilità strutturale, così il nostro eroe si fece liquidare dal fratello la sua parte e si trasferì a Londra dove finalmente divenne un professionista di Bridge e giocando con lo scozzese Michael Rosenberg anche il giocatore più vincente di tutta la City.

 Oggi, è cittadino americano, vive la maggior parte del suo tempo a New York ed è una delle più rivelanti personalità del mondo del bridge.

 Sposato con Lady Emma Elizabeth Anne (una delle due figlie di Neil Primrose, 7th Earl of Rosebery) dal febbraio 2001 hanno avuto due figli Zain e Rafi (il primo gioca a bridge ad un buon livello).

 Zia entrò a far parte del jet set internazionale quando nel 1981 compì l'incredibile impresa di conquistare la seconda piazza nella Bermuda Bowl di Port Chester con la squadra Pakistana, cosa che riuscì poi a bissare nella Rosenblum Cup del 1986 a Bal Harbor!

Presa la cittadinanza americana nella Bermuda Bowl , ha conquistato un bronzo (2000), un argento (2007), e finalmente, l'oro nel 2009.

 Quattro volte vincitore del BFAME Zonal Championship è stato dichiarato giocatore dell'anno dalla ACBL nel 1991.

 Ha anche conseguito diversi titoli Nord Americani tra i quali ricordiamo le 5 Reisinger del 1987, 89, 96, 2008 e 2009, le 2 Spingold del 1991 e 2003, i 4 Mitchell del 1991, 1996, 2006 e 2008, le 5 Vanderbilt del 1994, 1996, 2015, 2016 e 2023 ed il Jacoby del 2009.

 Tra i suoi numerosi altri successi internazionali ricordiamo le sei! vittorie nel trofeo Cap Gemini (1989, 1992, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001), l'Olimpiade Senior del 2016, il secondo posto nelle Olimpiadi a Coppie del 1999 e del 2004 e alle Olimpiadi a Squadre del 2004.

 Ha anche vinto il World Transnational Mixed Teams del 2004 e del 2014,  la Warren Buffett Cup nel 2006 e 2010, la Senior Bowl nel 2015, il Cavendish Teams nel 1986 e 2017, la sua seconda Gold Cup nel 2018 e ha colto l'argento agli Europei Open a Coppie del 2013 e del 2017 e l'oro in quelli a Squadre Senior nel 2019.

 Zia è stato anche nominato 5 volte giocatore dell'anno dall'ACBL: 1991, 1996, 2000, 2005 e 2012.

 Questi risultati lo hanno portato a conquistare i titoli di  World Grand Master  e di Senior Grand Master che gli hanno conferito l'onore di poter far parte della Hall of Fame.

Zia Mahmood was born in Karachi in Pakistan on January 7, 1946 but he lived his youth in England where his parents had moved and tried in vain to make him study and play cricket.

At just 19, he left the English countryside to move to London where he quickly became a skilled croupier in a clandestine gambling house and where he got to know bridge for the love of a girl who couldn't go out but who frequented a club with her bridge.

Orphaned of his mother at the age of just 21, he moved to Pakistan to take care of the family publishing house together with his brother Ali and also had to worry about getting his brother out of prison who had ended up there for political reasons.

After leaving Pakistan, the Mahmood brothers moved to Abu Dhabi where they improvised building contractors having a lot of luck.

But between Zia and work there had always been a structural incompatibility, so our hero had his share liquidated by his brother and moved to London where he finally became a professional bridge player and playing with the Scotsman Michael Rosenberg also the player most successful of all the City.

Today, he is an American citizen, lives most of his time in New York and is one of the most outstanding personalities in the world of bridge.

Married to Lady Emma Elizabeth Anne (daughter of Neil Primrose, 7th Earl of Rosebery) since February 2001, they have two sons Zain and Rafi (Zain play to bridge at good level).

Zia became part of the international jet set when in 1981 he accomplished the incredible feat of taking second place in the Bermuda Bowl in Port Chester with the Pakistani team, which he then managed to repeat in the 1986 Rosenblum Cup in Bal Harbor!

He took US citizenship in the Bermuda Bowl, captured a bronze (2000), a silver (2007), and finally, gold in 2009.

A four-time winner of the BFAME Zonal Championship, he was named the ACBL's Player of the Year in 1991.

He has also achieved several North American titles among which we remember the 5 Reisinger of 1987, 89, 96, 2008 and 2009, the 2 Spingold of 1991 and 2003, the 4 Mitchell of 1991, 1996, 2006 and 2008, the 5 Vanderbilt of 1994 , 1996, 2015, 2016 and 2023 and the Jacoby of 2009.

Among his many other international successes we mention the six! victories in the Cap Gemini trophy (1989, 1992, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001), the 2016 Senior Olympics, second place in the 1999 and 2004 Pairs Olympics and the 2004 Team Olympics.

He also won the 2004 and 2014 World Transnational Mixed Teams, the Warren Buffett Cup in 2006 and 2010, the Senior Bowl in 2015, the Cavendish Teams in 1986 and 2017, his second Gold Cup in 2018 and took silver at the European Open Pairs in 2013 and 2017 and gold in the Senior Teams in 2019.

Zia was also named ACBL Player of the Year 5 times: 1991, 1996, 2000, 2005, and 2012.

These results led him to conquer the titles of World Grand Master  and Senior Grand Master which gave him the honor of being able to be part of the Hall of Fame.
