Le prime edizioni del Campionato Europeo a Coppie sono state disputate in forma discontinua e di molti di esse sono andate perdute le tracce.
Le edizioni del 1976 e del 1980 furono annesse alle Olimpiadi e sono le prime sotto il patrocinio della Federazione Europea.
Nel 1985 la gara viene riconosciuta ufficialmente dalla European Bridge League.
Durante i Campionato di Tenerife del 2001, l'Assemblea Generale ed il Comitato Esecutivo della Federazione Europea hanno deciso, a partire dal 2003, la ristrutturazione dei Campionati Europei in European Teams Championships e in European Open Championships.
Nell'ambito degli European Open Championships che si svolgono negli anni dispari è inserito un Campionato Transnazionale a Coppie Open al quale possono partecipare un numero illimitato di giocatori liberamente composte da giocatori provenienti da ogni parte del mondo.
Gli attuali Campionati Transnazionali a Coppie Open vengono idealmente a rappresentare una ideale continuazione nel tempo dei precedenti Campionati Europei di Categoria.
