Dorthe Schaltz è nata a Copenaghen il 22 settembre1956 ed oggi vive a Nyborg una cittadina marinara sull'isola danese di Funen la cui comunità municipale, dopo aver recentemente inglobato altri due comuni, conta oltre 30.000 abitanti.
Infermiera diplomata lavora in una clinica privata della cittadina dove vive.
Dorthe, che è figlia d'arte, ha iniziato a giocare a Bridge all'età di 13 anni sotto la guida del padre e leggendo molti libri. È sposata con Peter un campione danese che si mise in luce vincendo i Campionati Europei Juniores del 1970 a Dublino e la cui mamma Lizzie vinse i Campionati Europei Femminili nel 1955.
Dorthe ha giocato molto poco nella nazionale femminile del suo Paese preferendo impegnarsi in quella Open, ma, nonostante questo, ha vinto nel 1988 le Olimpiadi di Venezia.
Assieme al marito Peter, hanno vinto nel 1993 l'argento nei Campionati Europei a Squadre Open e nel 2016 il bronzo alle Olimpiadi a Squadre Senior.
Dorthe è una delle due sole donne che hanno saputo compiere questa impresa (l'altra è stata, 40 anni prima, l'inglese Dimmie Fleming).
Dorthe e Peter sono anche gli unici coniugi ad essere saliti su un podio negli European National Open.
Dorthe ha anche vinto 3 bronzi negli Europei a Squadre Miste (1996, 2003, e 2013), un altro bronzo alle Olimpiadi Senior del 2016 e nella D'Orsi Cup del 2022 in coppia con il marito oltre a una ventina di titoli nazionali.
Suo figlio Martin ha iniziato la terza generazione dei bridgisti Schaltz, vincendo le Olimpiadi Invernali Juniores (2002), guadagnando il bronzo nei Mondiali Juniores del 2001, l'argento in quelli successivi (2003) per poi arrivare all'oro nel 2008. Martin, che oggi è un World International Master, ha anche vinto l'argento negli Europei Giovanili del 2003.
In squadra con il marito e con il figlio Martin, Dorthe ha guadagnato il bronzo nella Coppia dei Campioni del 2014.
Anche sua figlia Anne Mette ha fatto parte delle Nazionali giovanili del suo Paese.

Today he is a World International Master and he won also the silver in the Youth European of 2003.
Teammate with husband and Martin, they earned the bronze in 2014 Champion's Cup and, only with husband, in the Senior Teams at the Olympiad of 2016.
Her daughter Anne Mette has been part of the Youth National Denmark.
