Karen  Mc CALLUM

 

 Karen è nata il 9 giugno del 1946 a San Francisco in California e si è trasferita nel 1970 a New York dove ha vissuto per 25 anni.

  Quando era ancora una studentessa presso la Notre Dame University, si sposò con il suo primo marito che era un accanito giocatore di Tornei e si vide costretta ad imparare il Bridge per non passare tutte le notti da sola a casa!

 Nel 1972 lasciò per qualche tempo il Bridge giocato per assistere affascinata alle partite dei grandi campioni che si esibivano nei Circoli della Grande Mela, poi riprese a giocare sotto la guida di Matthew Granovetter fino a divenire una vera e propria agonista.

 Si risposò nel 1979, ancora con un bridgista e, fino al 1980 lavorò come disegnatrice prima di dedicarsi completamente alle molte attività che il Bridge può procurare e alla sua seconda passione che è quella di scrivere novelle.

 Karen che ha avuto due figlie, attualmente vive in una storica fattoria ad Exeter nel New Hampshire con il suo secondo marito Alex, dove opera come editrice, scrittrice,  giocatrice e insegnante di Bridge.

Come giocatrice Karen divenne fortissima e vinse diversi titoli nazionali di Categoria fin quando, nel 1989 conquistò la sua prima Venice Cup successo che poi bissò nel 1993 e sfiorò nel 1995 guadagnando l'argento.

Nel 1990 vinse il suo primo Mondiale a Coppie giocando con la sua partner di allora Kerry Sanborn, successo anche questo bissato, stavolta nel 2002, in coppia con Debbie Rosenberg.

Per sua esplicita dichiarazione, il suo momento bridgistico più emozionante fu quando nel 1992 arrivò seconda al Sunday Times Invitational di Londra giocando in coppia con Sally Brock.

World Woman Grand Master, nel 2003 ha lasciato nuovamente il Bridge giocato per poi riprenderlo tre anni più tardi, vincendo nel 2006 i World Mixed Pairs e nel 2008 lo squadre Open del Gold Coast australiano e una seconda medaglia d'argento nella Venice Cup del 2009. In Australia ha anche vinto altri titoli nazionali.

Nel 2014 ha vinto i World Bridge Women Teams e nel 2015 agli Europei Open ha vinto il Women Teams guadagnando il bronzo nel Mixed Teams.

Nel 2017 ha guadagnato l'argento nello Squadre Femminili agli Europei Open e nel 2018 ha vinto la McConnell.

In campo nazionale ha vinto 16 NABC tra cui ricordiamo i 4 Sternberg (1999, 2006, 2007 e 2008).

Karen è anche stata anche coach delle Squadre Nazionali Turche e della Nazionale Open Australiana.

Il suo sogno dichiarato, che però lei stessa pensa irrealizzabile, è quello di partecipare alla Bermuda Bowl con la squadra Open americana.

Karen was born on June 9, 1946 in San Francisco, California and moved to New York in 1970 where she lived for 25 years.

When she was still a student at Notre Dame University, she married her first husband who was an avid tournament player and found herself forced to learn the Bridge not to spend all nights alone at home!

In 1972 she left for a while the Bridge played to assist fascinated the games of the great champions who performed in the Big Apple Circles, then resumed playing under the guidance of Matthew Granovetter until becoming a real agonist.

She remarried in 1979, again with a bridge player and, until 1980, he worked as a designer before devoting himself completely to the many activities that Bridge can provide and to his second passion, that of writing novels.

Karen, who has two daughters, is currently living on a historic farm in Exeter, New Hampshire, with her second husband, Alex, where she works as a publisher, writer, player and teacher in Bridge.

As a player, Karen became very strong and won several national category titles until, in 1989, she conquered her first Venice Cup success, which was then repeated in 1993 and touched in 1995, earning silver.

In 1990 she won his first Pairs World Women Championship playing with his then-partner Kerry Sanborn, this success too, this time in 2002, paired with Debbie Rosenberg.

For her explicit statement, her most emotional bridge moment was when in 1992 she came second in the Sunday Times Invitational in London playing together with Sally Brock.

World Woman Grand Master left the Bridge again in 2003 and then resume it three years later, winning the World Mixed Pairs in 2006 and the Australian Open Gold Coast team in 2008 and a second silver medal in the Venice Cup in 2009. In Australia she won other national championships.

In 2014 she won the World Bridge Women Teams and in 2015 at the European Open she won the Women Teams gaining bronze in the Mixed Teams.

In 2017 she won silver in the Women's Teams at the European Open and in 2018 she won the McConnell.

In the national field she won 16 NABC among which we remember the 4 Sternberg (1999, 2006, 2007 and 2008).

Karen has also been a coach of the Turkish National Teams and the Australian Open National Team.

Her declared dream, which she herself thinks unattainable, is to participate in the Bermuda Bowl with the American Open team.
