Il primo Campionato Mondiale a Coppie in assoluto può essere considerato
quello organizzato dal mitico Ely
Culbertson nel 1932 sotto il nome "World Bridge Olympic" che
fu vinto a sorpresa dai norvegesi: Isak Nielsen e Otto Krefting.
Negli anni successivi ci furono vari tornei assimilabili ad un Campionato del Mondo a Coppie Libere dei quali, però, purtroppo, sono andate perse le informazioni.
Il primo Campionato Mondiale a Coppie organizzato dalla WBF ebbe la caratteristica di un Olimpiade e si svolse nel 1962 per Cannes in tre sole Categorie: Open e Women per le Coppie e Squadre per il Misto.
Il Campionato a Squadre si ripeté solo nel 1974 e poi, a partire dal 1996 si trasferì nei giochi Olimpici.
Nel 1966 venne aggiunto il Coppie Misto e nel 1978 nacque la Rosenblum Cup a Squadre.
Nel 1990 si ebbe l'introduzione della Categoria Senior e nel 1994 si aggiunse la Mc Connell Cup riservata a Squadre femminili.
Oggi, ogni anno pari non bisestile, la World Bridge Federation organizza i Campionati Mondiali a Coppie per ogni Categoria, spesso accompagnati da gare sussidiarie che impegnano i giocatori eliminati dalle fasi finali.

In subsequent years there were various tournaments similar to a World Pairs Championships, but, unfortunately, have lost the information.
The first World Pairs Championships organized by the WBF had the characteristic of an Olympiad and was held in Cannes in 1962 for only three categories: Open and Women for Pairs and Mixed for Teams.
The Team Championship was repeated in 1974 and then from 1996 moved into the Olympic games.
In 1966 was added and Mixed Pairs and in 1978 was born the Rosenblum Cup.
In 1990 came the introduction of the Senior Category and in 1994 joined the Mc Connell Cup.
Today, each even non-leap year, the World Bridge Federation is organizing the World Pairs Championships for every category, often accompanied by ancillary events that engage players eliminated in the final stages.
