Nata a San Diego nel 1946 da due noti bridgisti Richard e Muriel Mitchell, si sposò nel 1978 con Michael Shuman, un noto bridgista californiano dal quale si separò nel 1990.

 Dopo essere diventata un'affermata campionessa, nel 1988 si è trasferita a New York City per intraprendere la carriera di consulente finanziaria del mercato borsistico dove ha incontrato il suo secondo marito Steve Sanborn (nella foto a destra). Kerry si è pensionata nel 2001 ed oggi vive con Steve a Stony Point, un piccolo paesino a nord di Manhattan allevando purosangue.

 Divenuta una delle più forti giocatrici americane occupa tutt'oggi uno dei primissimi posti nella classifica di categoria edita dalla WBF con il titolo di World Women Grand Master.

 Giocatrice a tempo pieno e, anche buona golfista, Kerry ha vinto due edizioni della Venice Cup nel 1989  e nel 1993 e la Mc Connel Cup del 2002 a Montreal.

Tra i suoi numerosi trofei spiccano anche la vittoria conquistata nel Campionato Mondiali a Coppie Ladies nel 1990 nel quale ha replicato recentemente la 3ª posizione a Montreal e quella nel Mondiale Misto del 1978 nel quale ha conquistato anche una medaglia d'argento nel 1986.

Nel 2009 è tornato sul podio più ambito vincendo l'argento nella Venice Cup. Nel 2011 ha vinto la prima edizione dei World Mind nella Categoria Women Teams.

Kerry ha anche conseguito un gran numero di vittorie e piazzamenti nel circuito Nord Americano, alcuni dei quali in coppia con il marito Steve, anche lui ottimo bridgista.

Nel 2007 ha ricevuto l'onore di far parte della Hall of Fame del Bridge americano.

 Kerry was born in San Diego in 1946 and she inducted into the ACBL’s Hall of Fame in 2007. She is a six-time world champion.  She has won at least one World Championship in each of four consecutive decades, a record of “longevity at the top” equaled only by Bob Hamman.  (Indeed, one wonders if anyone in any competitive endeavor outside of bridge has, or could, come close to that record of sustained excellence.)

Although (because?) her parents played bridge, Kerri swore she never would.  But, she finally succumbed during her sophomore year at Miami University in Ohio, and played her first local duplicate with her father.  She soon moved to California, where she credits many experts for helping her during her early years as a player:  Mike Shuman, Harold Guiver, Mike Smolen, Hermine Baron, Harold Kandler, Rhoda Walsh, and, most significantly, Barry Crane.

Kerri’s first victory at the world level was the 1978 Mixed Pairs in which she and Barry Crane bested a world-class field by an astonishing margin of 5 boards.  During her highly successful 14-year partnership with Barry, she was responsible for buying his coffee (2/3 of a cup, black) and filling out the convention card, while he handled the travel arrangements.  Kerri’s five subsequent world championships were won in partnership with Karen McCallum (1989, 1990, 1993) and, most recently, with Irina Levitina (2002, 2006).

A full-time player beginning in the early 1970s, Kerri changed careers in 1988 when she began trading options full-time on the floor of the American Stock Exchange.  She retired in 2001.  An avid golfer, Kerri is treasurer-elect of her ladies’ golf league.  She lives in Stony Point, NY, with her husband, Steve. 

In 2009 he returned to the podium most sought after winning silver in the Venice Cup in 2011 won the inaugural World Mind Teams in the Women category.
