Joel Powhatan Wooldridge è nato il 19 luglio del 1979, a Rochester una città dello Stato di New York affacciata sul Lago Ontario, circa 120 Km ad est di Buffalo.  Ha studiato presso il Buffalo State College e la Williamsville East High Scholl, senza però completare gli studi di laurea.

 Oggi vive a New York dove è un giocatore professionista che coltiva interesse per molti giochi e in particolare per il biliardino, il backgammon e il volleyball.

 Ha iniziato a giocare a Bridge sotto la guida dei suoi genitori che erano entrambi giocatori agonisti ed ha esordito in un bridge club quando aveva solo 10 anni e, in poco tempo, è diventato il più giovane Life Master della sua generazione.

 Il suo primo successo internazionale è stata la medaglia d'argento conquistata ai Mondiali Juniores del 1999.

 Dopo aver vinto i Mondiali Juniores del 2001, ha vinto l'argento per le Americhe nei giochi invernali Juniores del 2002 e ha anche guadagnato uno dei titoli dei World Camps di Vargesztes in Ungheria nel 2003.

 La sua ascesa da Juniores è stata trionfale, sempre ai Mondiali Juniores a Squadre ha conquistato un bronzo nel 2003 assieme al premio Joan Gerard ed un oro nel 2005. Nel periodo universitario ha conquistato l'argento ai Mondiali Universitari a Squadre del 2006. 

 Nella categoria Open,  dopo aver vinto nel 1997 in coppia con Tom Carmichael che all'epoca aveva solo 23 anni, il loro primo Campionato Nazionale (IMP Pairs) stabilendo il record di coppia più giovane ad aver vinto un NABC, battendo di due anni quello detenuto dai Meckwell, ha guadagnato un secondo posto nella Spingold del 2005 ed ha vinto il Silodor del 2011 e nello stesso anno è stato nominato Giocatore dell'Anno dall'ACBL.

Ha coronato la sua aspirazione di far parte della Nazionale USA disputando la Bermuda Bowl  e vincendo l'argento nel 2001 ed il bronzo nel 2015.

Nel 2012 ha fatto parte della squadra USA che ha vinto la  Buffett Cup ed ha conquistato la seconda posizione nell'Individuale ai World Mind Games. Nel 2017 ha vinto il Wernher e nel 2018 ha guadagnato il bronzo nella Rosenblum. 

L'ultimo oro lo ha conquistato nel 2023 nei Mixed BAM agli Europei Transnazionali.

Joel was born in Rochester, NY on the 19th of July, 1979.

He has some college credits, but no degree. He is a bachelor.

Today Joel live in New York City and his hobbies include games of all types, but especially foosball, backgammon, and volleyball.

He is a full-time bridge professional.

He started playing bridge by learning it from his parents. They are both tournament bridge players. He went to my first club game just before my tenth birthday.

He learned the game quickly and became hooked right away. It took his about a year and a half to turn life master, whereupon he was the youngest life-master of his time.

He won the World Junior Teams Championships in 2001 and 2005, earning a silver medal in 1999 and a bronze medal in 2005.

How juniors he also won the silver medal in University Teams Cup of 2006 and the Joan Gerard award in 2003.

In the Open Category in 1997, he won IMP Pairs, his partner (Tom Carmichael) was 23. They are the youngest pair (combined ages) ever to win an open national title, beating out the previous record holders (Meckstroth & Rodwell) by 2 years. Then, he earned a place of honor in the Spingold 2005 and he won the Silodor 2011.

He crowned his aspiration to represent the US in open international competition  winning a silver medal in  Bermuda Bowl 2011 and bronze medal in 2015. Always in 2011 he has been nominated ACBL Player of the Year.

In 2012 he won the Buffett Cup and earning the second place at Men Individual of World Mind Games and in 2017 he won the Wernher, while, nel 2018 he earned a bronze medal in the Rosenblum.

Last gold medal he won in 2023 in the Mixed BAM at the European Transnational Teams.
