Introduced in Europe in 1976, Junior Camps played an important role in youth bridge development in Europe before they were opened to all Zones of the World Bridge Federation in 1995 Camps do not mainly address the champion players but the lesser mortals; they aim at helping young people make new friends, and strengthen ties already developed between older friends, under the umbrella of their common hobby. In the Camps there are very few rules, but many possibilities open to those who wish to take them. Many great players, including some of today’s World Champions, started their careers as shy participants at the European Camps where experience has shown that whoever joined once, came back again and again Union Camps were held exclusively in Europe every odd-numbered year until 2004 when the first such event was held in the United States. It was then planned that World Junior Camps be held annually: in Europe in even-numbered years and in North America in odd-numbered years The Youth Awards were instituted by the World Bridge Federation in 1989 as part of their general effort for the development of Junior Bridge worldwide. The Awards aim at rewarding aptitude, diligence and international spirit shown by participants at the Junior Camps. The winners do not receive any material prize, but earn the honour of enabling their countries to have a free and ex quota place in the next Junior Camp World Junior Camps were discontinued in 2007 |
