Alexander Smirnov è nato il 10 marzo del 1983 a San Pietroburgo ma è cresciuto a Lubecca dove ha studiato presso il locale Ginnasio l'Oberschule zum Dom, prima di dedicarsi completamente al bridge che aveva imparato all'età di 5 anni dall'omonimo padre.
Poliglotta (si sa esprimere oltre che in tedesco, in russo, inglese, spagnolo e francese), si è diplomato all'Oberschule zum Dom e oggi lavora presso il Bridge College Pilk di Lubecca.
Il suo primo torneo l'ha disputato all'età di 9 anni e oggi è un affermato insegnante ed uno dei più forti giocatori tedeschi in attività.
A 17 anni è entrato a far parte della nazionale juniores tedesca e dal 2008 fa parte di quella maggiore.
Ha un fratello che è il terzo Alexander della famiglia!
Vincitore di diversi titoli nazionali sul piano intercontinentale ha conquistato tra l'altro due bronzi nei Mondiali Transnazionali a Squadre (2007 e 2009) ed una terza medaglia dello stesso metallo l'ha guadagnata ai Mondiali a Coppie Open (2010). Nel 2013 ha vinto il Mitchell ai Fall NABC e nel biennio successivo il Jacoby ai Campionati di Primavera americani.
Sul piano continentale è arrivato secondo nella Champion Cup del 2009 e del 2014 e nei Transnazionali Europei a Squadre del 2011 e terzo nei Transazionali Europei a Squadre Open del 2013.
Coinvolto in uno scandalo e reo confesso, nel 2016 è stato squalificato a vita dalla Federazione Tedesca in coppia con il partner Piekarek e per 4 anni individualmente.

His first tournament he played at the age of 9 years and today is an accomplished teacher and one of the strongest German players.
At 17 he joined the German national junior and since 2008 is part of the larger.
He has a brother that is the third Alexander of family!
Winner of several national titles on the Intercontinental has won two bronze medals in World Transnational Open Teams (2007 and 2009) and a third medal of the same metal he has won the World Open Pairs (2010). In 2013 he won the Mitchell a the Fall NABC and in 2014 and 2015 the Jacoby at the Spring NABC.
On the mainland came in second in the Champion's Cup in 2009 and 2014 and at the European Transnational Teams in 2011. Third in 2013 European Open Teams.
Involved in a scandal and self-confessed, in 2016 was banned for life by the German Federation paired with partner Piekarek and for 10 years, later reduced to 6, individually.
