Originario del Derbyshire, Donald Athur Smedley è nato nel 1933 e come molti altri giocatori di bridge, in gioventù era un amante degli scacchi ma durante il servizio militare non trovava con chi misurarsi mentre molti commilitoni giocavano a bridge. Così fu costretto ad imparare e non smise mai più.
Dopo la laurea presa presso l'università di Manchester, insegnò nelle scuole superiori prima di diventare docente del dipartimento degli insegnanti dell'università di Loughborough.
Nonostante gli studi letterari dimostrò una grande attitudine per l'analisi matematica che applicò al bridge diventando uno dei migliori risolutori di problemi e guadagnando il titolo di Bridge Grandmaster.
Vincitori di diversi titoli nazionali è stato per decenni un elemento portante del Derby Bridge Club.
Sposato con June ebbe una figlia Janet e si pensionò nel 2013.
È scomparso a Didcot il 12 ottobre del 2020.

from Derbyshire, Donald Athur Smedley was born in
1933 and like many other bridge players, he was a
chess lover in his youth but during his military
service he couldn't find who to compete with while
many fellow soldiers played bridge. So he was forced
to learn and never stopped.
After graduating from Manchester University, he taught high school before becoming a lecturer in the teachers' department at Loughborough University.
Despite his literary studies he showed a great aptitude for mathematical analysis which he applied to bridge becoming one of the best problem solvers and earning the title of Bridge Grandmaster.
Winners of several national titles he has been a staple of the Derby Bridge Club for decades.
Married to June, he had a daughter Janet and retired in 2013.
He passed away in Didcot on October 12, 2020.
