 Alvin L.  ROTH

Alvin Leon Roth was born in the Bronx on November 6, 1914, a mathematics student at Stuyvesant High School, he graduated in statistics at the City College of New York where he met the Bridge for the first time, worked in Washington for the Government as a statistician.

Leaving for the Second World War, where he was also able to play at General Dwight Eisenhower's table and where he met Tobias Stone with whom he would form a lasting and legendary couple, on his return he settled in New York and devoted himself completely to bridge.

Arrived in Miami Beach for a tournament he was so attracted to the city to open a club that he managed for 5 years.

In 1940 he married Fay Eldestein with whom he had one son and whom he divorced in 1963.

Expressly summoned by the great Goren, he returned to Washington with his wife to participate in the founding of the famous School of Bridge.

In 1980 he remarried Jane Farrell (nothing to do with the legendary Jane Farell)  that survived him.

After about ten years, he returned to his native New York and bought the famous Mayfair Club which he managed until in 1995 he retired to Boca Raton in Florida, the city where he disappeared on April 18, 2007 after being considered one of the strongest players in the world.

Columnist and bridge writer, he was the greatest bidding theorist of his time and linked his name to the Roth-Stone system (Western Scientific) and to the introduction of many highly successful conventions such as: the negative double, the unusual SA and the response of forcing 1NT. His proposal to open fourth major when in third hand can be considered a real "future vision".

Internationally, he represented his country in 3 Bermuda Bowls (1955, 58, 67) winning silver each time and in a final with the Blue Team at the 1968 Deauville Olympics.

Domestically he won 26 titles playing with 11 different partners including: 6 Spingold (1940, 56, 57, 63, 66, 67), 4 Mitchell, (1955, 61, 69, 71), 4 Reisingers (1946 , 52, 61, 67), 3 Vanderbilt's (1943, 63, 68), the 1960 Silodor.
As a writer, Al left us "Al Roth on Bridge: The Roth-Stone System" (1953) and "Picture Bidding" (1991), and co-authored other successful books.

In 1995 the ACBL granted him the honor of being inducted into the Hall of Fame and since 2005 they have remembered him by naming him the Open Swiss Teams at Summer NABC's.
