Sandra  PENFOLD

Sandra Penfold nacque nel 1946 a Paignton nel Devon ma ha trascorso gran parte della sua vita nello Yorkshire a Tadcaster.

 Sposata con Martin Penfold ha fondato con il marito la Swift Research un'azienda di ricerca di mercato con sede a Wetherby che avuto parecchio successo.

 Sandra è uno dei pochissimi esempi di grandi campioni che hanno cominciato a giocare a bridge in età adulta, infatti, ha iniziato  solo dopo aver messo su famiglia: due figli ed una figlia.

 Sempre presente nei grandi eventi nazionali ha conquistato, tra l'altro, la Crockfords Cup, la Spring Foursomes e la Faulknewr Salver.

 Elemento abituale delle nazionali inglesi ha guadagnato l'argento alle Olimpiadi Femminili del 1988 e nel 1992 per poi vincerle nel 2008.

Negli Europei Femminili a Squadre ha guadagnato il bronzo nel 2002, negli Europei Transnazionali a Squadre Femminili ha vinto   l'argento nel 2007, negli Europei Transnazionali Senior del 2019 ha guadagnato il bronzo e, infine, ha vinto i Campionati Europei Transnazionali Misti a Squadre del 2007 campionato in cui ha guadagnato un argento anche nel Coppie Femminile.

Un altro argento lo ha vinto nella Venice Cup del 2017.

Nel 2008 è stata coach della Squadra Femminile inglese che ha vinto i 13th Bridge World.

Per un certo tempo ha ricoperto con grande dedizione, unica donna in quel periodo, la carica di Presidente del Comitato Giovanile dell'EBU, Sandra era solita insegnare e giocare con i suoi allievi tanto che quello fu un periodo denso di risultati per il bridge giovanile inglese.

Dopo un lungo periodo di cattiva salute è venuta a mancare il 26 febbraio del 2026.

Sandra Penfold was born in 1946 in Paignton, Devon, but spent most of her life in Tadcaster, Yorkshire.

Married to Martin Penfold, she and her husband founded Swift Research, a highly successful market research company based in Wetherby.

Sandra is one of the very few examples of great champions who began playing bridge as adults; in fact, she only started after having a family of two sons and a daughter.

A constant presence at major national events, she has won, among other titles, the Crockfords Cup, the Spring Foursomes, and the Faulknewr Salver.

A regular member of the English national teams, she won silver at the 1988 and 1992 Women's Olympic Games, before winning both in 2008.

She won bronze at the 2002 European Women's Team Championships, silver at the 2007 European Transnational Women's Team Championships, bronze at the 2019 European Senior Transnational Championships, and finally, she won the 2007 European Transnational Mixed Team Championships, where she also won silver in the Women's Pairs event.

She won another silver at the 2017 Venice Cup.

In 2008, she coached the English Women's Team that won the 13th Bridge World Championships.

For a time, she served with great dedication as the only woman at the time, serving as President of the EBU Youth Committee. Sandra regularly taught and played with her students, making it a period of great achievement for English youth bridge.

After a long period of ill health, she passed away on February 26, 2026.
