Irina Levitina è dotata di un'incredibile e multiforme genialità per tutti i giochi basati sulla strategia ed è l'unica donna al mondo che è stata capace di vincere dei titoli mondiali sia nel bridge che negli scacchi.
Nata a Leningrado nel 1954, Irina è emigrata negli Stati Uniti dove vive a Hackensack nel New Jersey, una cittadina una 30 di Km a Nord di New York, dopo aver preso la cittadinanza americana.
I rina, che è stata tre volte Campionessa Nazionale di Scacchi in Russia (1971, 1979, 1980), ha anche vinto tre volte le Olimpiadi femminili nel 1972, 1974 e 1984.
Trasferitasi in USA ha poi conquistato nel 1992 il titolo femminile degli scacchi anche di quel Paese.
Come bridgista Irina ha vinto le Olimpiadi femminili di Rodi nel 1996, le Olimpiadi Miste di Maastricht nel 2000, la Mc Connel Cup di Montreal nel 2002 e il Campionato Mondiale Femminile a Coppie di Verona nel 2006.
Tra le prime 10 Woman Gran Master in classifica WBF, Irina, sempre per i colori della squadra USA, ha anche conquistato la medaglia di bronzo alla Venice Cup di Hammamet nel 1997, quella d'oro a Shanghai nel 2007 e quella d'argento a San Paolo nel 2009. Nel 2011 ha vinto la prima edizione dei World Mind nella Categoria Women Team.
I suoi hobbies principali sono la lettura ed assistere alle partite di hockey su ghiaccio.
Irina is the only person in the world to win world championships in both chess
and bridge. A six-time World Champion in bridge, she is currently the top
US woman in the WBF Masterpoint rankings.
Especially well respected for her declarer play, Irina was one of 34 world-class players (including only 4 women) invited to participate in the World Par Contest, a declarer play competition, held in connection with the 1998 World Championships in Lille, France. In finishing 14th overall (and first among the women), Irina placed ahead of such stars as Benito Garozzo, Chip Martel, Steve Weinstein, and Zia.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Irina was first taught chess as a young child by her father. By the age of 18 she was a member of the Soviet team and was the top woman at the chess Olympiad. At age 18, Irina also took up bridge, introduced to the game by Simeon Furman, her chess teacher (and Karpov’s) at the time. Immigrating to the US in December 1990, Irina co-founded the International Chess Academy in Teaneck, NJ, in 1997 (you can read more about the chess school and Irina's chess career at www.icanj.net).
In 2011 she won the inaugural World Mind in Women Teams Category.
When not teaching chess or playing or teaching bridge, Irina enjoys reading (especially mysteries), logic puzzles, and watching ice hockey. She lives in Hackensack, NJ.
