Harry J.  FISHBEIN

 

  Di New York City (1898-1976) è stato un giocatore professionista di pallacanestro e un forte giocatore americano che ha ideato la convenzione che porta il suo nome.

 Per un quarto di secolo è stato l'amabile co-proprietario e Direttore del famosissimo Mayfair Bridge Club di New York.

 Ha fatto parte alcune volte della rappresentativa statunitense ed ha vinto una ventina di tornei nazionali tra i quali ben 5 volte la Vanderbilt, nel 1960 è stato capitano non giocatore del team USA alle Olimpiadi e nel 1959 all'età di 61 anni giocò per prima volta nella Bermuda Bowl.

 Ha ideato la convenzione di intervento sui barrage che porta il suo nome.

 Dal 1952 al 1966 fu tesoriere della ACBL rifiutando qualsiasi compenso, motivo per il quale l'ACBL ha istituito il premio Sally Fishbein, che premia il giocatore che consegue il maggior numero di Master Point nei Summer NABC's, e che ricorda sua moglie.

 Nel 2000 la ACBL gli ha concesso l'onore di far parte della Hall of Fame.

Harry Fishbein of New York City, was a pro basketball player and president of the famous Mayfair Club, proprietor from 1940-70. Fishbein, who wore a beret as his trademark, authored the Fishbein convention and was an outstanding player. 

He won 12 North American titles: the Vanderbilt in 1936, 1943, 1947, 1949 and 1958; the Life Master Pairs in 1939 and 1940; the Master Individual in 1942 and 1952; the Master Mixed Teams in 1947; the Men’s Pairs in 1959, and the Men’s B-A-M Teams in 1965. Fishbein placed 2nd 18 times: the Spingold in 1937, 1943, 1945 and 1958; the Master Individual in 1938; the Men’s Pairs in 1940; the Chicago (since 1965 the Reisinger) in 1942, 1953, 1957 and 1959; the Master Mixed Teams in 1945 and 1948; the Men’s B-A-M Teams in 1952, 1953 and 1960; the Open Pairs in 1959 and 1968, and the Life Master Men’s Pairs in 1963. 

He represented the U.S. in the Bermuda Bowl in 1959 and served as the non-playing captain of the 1960 U.S. World Olympiad Team. Fishbein served as the ACBL treasurer for 14 years (1952-1966) and was named the ACBL's Honorary Member in 1966.
