John CARRUTHERS  &  Katie THORPE

 Nato nel 1947 in Gran Bretagna, John Carruthers vive a Kingsville una bella cittadina lacustre sul'Erie, cittadino canadese, ricercatore chimico ed esperto di informatica, John si è laureato alla Mount Allison University di Sackville.

 Scrittore, appassionato di golf, di equitazione, di musica e di viaggi, è stato editore dell'Ontario Kibitzer ed ha collaborato come articolista per molte delle principali riviste federali del mondo.

 Come giocatore John ha rappresentato il Canada in 5 Campionati Mondiali ed ha conquistato diversi titoli nazionali e nord americani. Tra quelli internazionali ricordiamo il Forbo International Teams del 2000 ed il Forbo Nation Cup del 2001 e l'argento nelle Olimpiadi Senior a Coppie del 2016. Tra quelli nazionali 8 campionati canadesi e 3 NABC.

 John, che è stato capitano non giocatore di rappresentative nazionali che hanno riportato importanti affermazioni in campo internazionale, è stato indotto nella Hall of Fame canadese nel 2015.

Detiene entrambi i titoli di World Master e Senior Master e nel 2023 è stato premiato con il Blackwood.

 Negli ultimi quarant'anni ha vissuto con Katie Thorpe, una World Life Master canadese di caratura internazionale che ha conquistato la medaglia di bronzo nelle Olimpiadi del 1988 e quella d'argento in quelle del 2000, nonché il bronzo nella Venice Cup del 1989.

Katie, che è nata ad Harrow nell'Ontario e che ha studiato presso la McMaster University di Hamilton, ha lavorato a lungo presso una Compagnia di Assicurazioni ed ha avuto una figlia, Tina.

Pluricampionessa nazionale, nel 1990-91 è stata Presidente della Federazione Canadese e nel 2015 è stata eletta nella Hall of Fame del Bridge Canadese.

Assieme a John hanno vinto il Mixed BAM Teams del 1991.

 John Carruthers is an accomplished player, writer, and administrator. At the time of his induction in the CBF Hall of Fame in 2015, he had played for Canada at the World Championships 14 times. He had also served as the non-playing captain for 12 Canadian Open, Women and Junior teams. His achievements as a player include:
• 3 North American titles (1991 Master Mixed Board-A-Match Teams, 2008 Baze Senior Knockout Teams, and 2008 Truscott/USPC Senior Swiss Teams), as well as a 2nd in the 1988 von Zedtwitz Life Masters Pairs
• 4 Canadian National Team Championships (1983, 1987, 1999, and 2005), and 2nd on 6 occasions
• 4 Canadian Senior Team Championships (2007, 2010, 2012 and 2015), and twice runner-up
• A win in the 1990 Canadian Open Pairs Championship
• Winner of the first Richmond Trophy in 1974
• Winner of the 2000 Forbo Invitational Teams (Netherlands), and the 2001 International Invitational Teams (Netherlands)
• Second in the Seniors Pairs Olympiads of 2016

Carruthers served in a number of volunteer administrative capacities, most notably as Chairman of the 1997 World Junior Championships held in Hamilton, Ontario.

The trophy that recognizes the junior teams that represent Canada at the World Youth Team Championships is named in his honor.

Carruthers bridge articles have been published in many countries, including Canada, USA, England, Australia, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina and Japan. He has been the editor of the monthly International Bridge Press Association’s Bulletin since 2002. He also served as the editor of ACBL Unit 166 publication, The Kibitzer, for 16 years, and in 2013 he was made a Lifetime Honorary Member of Unit 166.

He is both a World Master and a Senior Master and in 2023 he received the Blackwood Award.

Katie Thorpe is still gainfully employed by Dominion of Canada Insurance Company, with no retirement date in sight as she needs to support JC in the style to which he has become accustomed.
