Nato nel 1914 a Roma, ma cittadino della svizzera francese, laureato in matematica, è stato uno dei più rappresentativi giocatori svizzeri ed uno dei giocatori europei più forti nel ventennio 1950-70, in assoluto uno dei più forti di ogni tempo nel gioco della carta.

Si è laureato al Politecnico di Zurigo ed ha vissuto a Ginevra dove lavorava nel campo dell'informatica ed ha formato con Pietro Bernasconi quella che è stata la coppia di riferimento del team elvetico per molti anni.
Ha partecipato per il team del suo paese alle Olimpiadi del 1960, 1964 e 1968.
Nel 1954 fu chiamato a rinforzare la squadra francese nello storico incontro che, al Madison Square Garden di New York, oppose l'Europa alla squadra statunitense.
Sempre per la nazionale elvetica ha partecipato a 12 Campionati Europei ed ha fatto parte della squadra che rappresentò l'Europa ai Campionati Mondiali che si svolsero a Montecarlo nel 1954.
Nel 1965 fondò con Pierre Collet la IBA "International Bridge Academy" che per oltre venti anni studiò il Bridge dal punto di vista della statistica fornendo un gran contributo alla razionalizzazione del gioco.
È stato uno dei primi membri della International Bridge Press Association e suo Vice Presidente Esecutivo fino al momento della sua morte.
Dotato di una verve accattivante, era inimitabile come commentatore al vu-graph, ed è anche stato uno dei più brillanti articolisti bilingue (francese ed inglese) che il bridge abbia mai avuto. In tale veste, Bridge d'Italia, la rivista ufficiale della FIGB, lo ha avuto per lungo tempo come suo stimato collaboratore.
È scomparso il 3 settembre del 1994 lasciando orfana l'intera comunità bridgistica e in eredità la Fondazione Besse che con 35.000$ per molti anni ha sponsorizzato il premio omonimo che veniva consegnato dalla sua vedova Rachel.

welcher unzählige Titel gewann. Jean Besse erblickte das Licht des Lebens 1914,
er ist im Jahre 1994 gestorben, bis kurz vor seinem Tod war er stets in der
Bridgeszene anzutreffen. Er schrieb - zusammen mit Pierre Beguin - auch ein
Bridgebuch mit dem Titel "Bridge - 66 Curiositis by Pierre Béguin
and Jean Besse". Dies erschien im Verlag Journal de Genève im Jahre 1987.
Jean Besse spielte 1954 mit folgendem namhaften französischen Team die Bermuda Bowl: Jacques Amouraben, Rene Bacherich, Jean Besse (Svizzera), Pierre Ghestem, Marcel Kornblum, Karl Schneider (Austria) und errang dabei den zweiten Platz!

A mathematician from Geneva. He represented Switzerland in the Olympiades of 1960, 1964, 1968. He took part in 12 European Championships for Switzerland. He was part of the French Team in Bermuda Bowl (Monaco 1954). The team included Jacques Amouraben, Rene Bacherich, Jean Besse from Switzerland, Pierre Ghestem, Marcel Kornblum, Karl Schneider from Austria.
He collaborated with Terence Reese and translated into French his classic work "Bridge de haute icole". Jean Besse was one of the earliest members of the International Bridge Press Association of which he was later Executive Vice-President until his death. Among other victories, he won the prestigious Sunday Times invitational tournament in 1969 with John Collings. He won the Bols Brilliancy Prize for the best play of 1982, and the Bols Tips Competition in 1976 and 1994.
Some of his most frequent partners: Claude Reichenbach, Andri Durouvenoz, Tony Trad, Tom Fenwick, Georges Catzeflis, Ada Staffelbach.
He wrote a book "Bridge 66 Curiosities by Pierre Biguin and Jean Besse", (Journal de Geneve 1987).
Jean regularly published the bridge column in the Journal de Geneve.
Mrs. Jean Besse and the Jean Besse Foundation sponsor the Jean Besse Par Contest at the World Bridge Championships.
The Jean Besse Trophy gives the first prize of $35,000 as an award at a ceremony with Besse's widow Rachel . The prize fund of 100,000 Swiss francs is provided by the Jean Besse Foundation, which is chaired by Ortiz-Patino. The Par Contest has been named the Jean Besse Trophy Par Contest to commemorate one of the best minds the game has known. Patino further stated that Besse solved bridge problems by means of an orderly sequence of logical steps, making less use of intuition.
The Coupe Suisse Open "Trophie Jean Besse" acknowledge the best Swiss bridge player that has ever been in Switzerland.
