Nato nel 1911 ad Anversa, André Littman Lemaitre è stato una delle massime personalità del bridge del secolo scorso fin quando non si è spento a causa di un infarto nel 1980 nella sua città natale.

Funzionario di una importante azienda industriale belga, parlava correttamente sei lingue ed è stato scrittore, giornalista e buon giocatore di bridge.
Restò per un decennio Presidente della Lega Europea dopo essere subentrato nel 1973 all'italiano Silvio Carini Mazzacara, nello stesso anno fu nominato dall'IBPA "Bridge Man of the Year".
Segretario della World Bridge Federation fin dal 1970, ha collaborato alla messa a punto delle norme che regolano le competizioni internazionali ed è stato il promotore della costituzione della European Union Bridge League che ha gestito per molti anni i Campionati riservati ai paesi del MEC.
Insieme al nostro Guido Barbone, ha anche ideato la Coppa Europa, un trofeo sponsorizzato dalla Philip Morris che veniva assegnato tra i circoli che vincevano i Campionati Nazionali.
A lui era intitolato il trofeo che veniva consegnato ogni due anni alla squadra vincitrice dei Campionati Europei.
Come giocatore ha fatto spesso parte della Nazionale del suo Paese della quale è stato anche Capitano è ha vinto diversi tornei nazionali ed internazionali.
