 John Dimitri Roundel Collings nacque a Londra nel 1933 da padre inglese e madre greco-russa e nella prima parte della sua vita fu impiegato di Banca. 

 John giocava l'Auction Bridge assieme ad ogni altro gioco di carte con la sorella e gli altri parenti già all'età di cinque anni! ma fu solo al ritorno del cognato dalla guerra, dove quest'ultimo aveva appreso il gioco, che fu spinto ad interessarsi seriamente al Bridge.

 Approdato al Circolo di Croydon, un quartiere del Sud di Londra, vi incontrò Alan Truscott che lo incoraggiò a continuare.

 Dotato di uno straordinario intuito giocò nella rappresentativa inglese fin dal 1950 e nella prima parte della sua carriera costituì una formidabile coppia britannica con Jonathan Cansino con cui vinse diversi titoli nazionali.

A seguito di un attacco di cuore capitatogli nel 1966, si trasferì in Svizzera dove divenne giocatore professionista e dove visse per oltre 10 anni prima a Zurigo e poi a Ginevra, legando delle partnership di grande successo con due dei migliori giocatori svizzeri del tempo: Tony Trad e Jean Besse.

Rientrato in Inghilterra arrivò a cogliere la seconda piazza ai Campionati Europei a Squadre del 1981 giocando un innovativo sistema a basse di "passo forte" chiamato "Walpurgis Club" in coppia con Paul Hackett con il quale, nello stesso anno, vinse anche l'argento nel Campionato a Coppie del MEC.

Giocò sia per la nazionale Inglese che per quella elvetica.

Si sposò tre volte. Ebbe un figlio dalla prima moglie Nora che era libanese, la seconda Pam la sposò durante la sua permanenza in Svizzera e l'ultima: Lucy, la riportò dall'Indonesia.

Come ricordano i molti suoi allievi, fu anche un insegnante di Bridge molto severo. 

Prima della sua scomparsa, avvenuta a Londra l'11 marzo del 2005, fu anche capitano non giocatore della squadra inglese che partecipò alle Olimpiadi di Istanbul. 

  Born in GB, lived for more then ten years in Zurich. Around 1960 he was married and lived in Geneva, there he often played with Jean Besse. He is an excellent Bridge player on a top level. One of his partners was Susy Frölicher.

English born 1933 a retired bank officer, a charismatic personality nicknamed the 'enfant terrible' of British Bridge. He died in March 2005. He represented Britain and Switzerland  in one World Championships. His career includes a second place in the European Championships 1981. In the early '60s, John formed a tournament partnership with another British player Jonathan Cansino. They played in the 1965 European Championships in Ostend. He had six National wins which includes Gold Cup once. He won the Sunday Time Pairs in 1969. John had a heart attack in 1969, he was only 33 years old. The drugs prescribed for his heart condition had devastating side effects from which he has suffered ever since. 

John lived abroad, mostly in Switzerland, for most of the next decade but after his return he formed a partnership with Paul Hackett. They competed in the 1981 European Championships (Birmingham), playing a forcing pass system.

John has the unusual distinction of having represented England in the British Home International Series (Camrose) in each of the last 5 decades, with different partners. 1950s Ronnie Crown 1960s Jonathan Cansino 1970s Joe Amsbury 1980s Paul Hackett 1990s Martin Jones.

He recently formed a partnership with Martin Jones, a British Junior international. John is a stern tutor and the manner of his criticisms is well known at home.

  John Dimitri Roundel Collings, ein ehemaliger Weltklassespieler aus England, lebte und spielte mehr als 10 Jahre in Zürich. Er war während einiger Jahre u.a. Standardpartner von Susy Frölicher. Weiter spielet er jahrelang im NL A Team des Bridge Center Zürich mit den Gebr|dern Fredy und Leo Weiss sowie eben Susy Frölicher. 1966 war John Collings nach Genf gezogen und Bridgeprofi geworden.

Seine Partner in der Schweiz waren Jean Besse und Toni Trad, mit welchen er auch international für die Schweiz antrat.

In den letzten Jahren seines Lebens war John gesundheitlich angeschlagen, beherrschte das Bridgespiel aber nach wie vor auf hohem Niveau. Er spielt sein selbst entwickeltes System Cacoll. Er war ein Meister des Bluffgebots.

John Collings erblickte das Licht der Welt am 6. April 1933 in London, Sohn eines britischen Vaters und einer griechisch-russischen Mutter. Er liess sich ursprünglich als Bankangestellter ausbilden.1969 erlitt er auf einem Flug von Beirut nach Genf einen Herzinfarkt, welcher wegen der zu nehmenden Medikamente sein weiteres Leben beeinflusste.

Seine erste Frau war die Libanesin Nora, von welcher er sich später scheiden liess und sie ein zweites Mal heiratete. 2001 heiratet er in Indonesien Lusy, welche mit ihm nach England zügelte. Er starb am 11 März 2005. Aus der ersten Ehe hinterlässt er eine Tochter und zwei Enkelkinder.
