Gary Cohler è nato nella periferia nord di Chicago il 23 marzo del 1960 ed ha studiato presso la Evanston Township High School e presso l'Università Cattolica De Paul.
Entrambi i suoi genitori erano ottimi giocatori.
Poi si è trasferito in Florida ad Aventura una cittadina rivierasca poco a nord di Miami Beach.
Giocatore professionista, World International Master oltre al bridge, ama il golf, il calcio e i suoi immancabili sigari.
Il novello "cigar" si è messo in evidenza sulla scena americana vincendo tra l'altro 8 volte il Grand National Teams nel 1995, 2004, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2021 (edizione on line), il Jacoby nel 2000 e la Reisinger nel 2006.
Recentemente è salito su quella internazionale vincendo l'European Transnational Open Team del 2011.
