Nel 1934, sulle pagine di Bridge World, la più nota rivista di bridge tutti i tempi, comparve un articolo a firma Wormwood che suggeriva di utilizzare il gradino licitativo di 4SA per verificare se il numero degli Assi presenti sulla Linea del Dichiarante fossero sufficienti per impegnar un contratto di Slam.
Sotto quello pseudonimo, si nascondeva per motivi di riservatezza connessi con la sua attività lavorativa del tempo, uno dei padri fondatori del bridge mondiale, quel Blackwood del quale la convenzione avrebbe poi preso il nome.
Blackwood suggeriva di rispondere alla richiesta di Assi effettuata con 4SA con questa scaletta convenzionale:
5♣ = 0 o 4 Assi
5♦ = 1 Asso
5♥ = 2 Assi
5♠ = 3 Assi
In seguito sono state ideate numerose scale alternative tra le quali ricordiamo tra le due più diffuse:
5♣ = 0 o 3 Assi 5♣ = 0 o 3 Assi
5♦ = 1 o 4 Assi 5♦ = 1 o 4 Assi
5♥ = 2 Assi 5♥ = 2 Assi con il minimo di quanto in precedenza dichiarato
5♠ = 2 Assi on il massimo di quanto in precedenza dichiarato
Sembra che la Smazzata che ispirò ad Easley la sua invenzione fosse stata la seguente:

Nell'articolo veniva anche presentata la replica dell'interrogazione che, effettuata con 5SA, serviva a chiarire con lo stesso identico sistema di risposte a gradino il numero dei Re, stavolta, in chiave di grande Slam.
Blackwood, nel corso dell'articolo metteva sull'avviso circa il fatto che per chiedere i Re bisognava aver appurato la presenza di tutti e 4 gli Assi e che, nel rispondere a questa replica dell'interrogazione, bisognava fare molta attenzione a non dichiarare un singolo come fosse un Re.
Inoltre, l'autore prendendo ad esempio questa Smazzata:

ammoniva di non ricorrere alla sua convenzione quando si aveva un doubleton scartinato nella propria mano o, quando si aveva un void, che rendeva impossibile capire se l'eventuale mancanza di un Asso fosse un problema, oppure, no.
Oggi può apparire incredibile come a quei tempi la Blackwood rappresentò un'innovazione epocale, sta di fatto che, da allora, il 4SA fece il suo ingresso trionfale in tutti i Sistema Licitativi del mondo.
Baby Blackwood
Ci sono delle sequenze dichiarative nelle quali la volontà di giocare in un seme Nobile è un fatto ormai accertato:

In questo tipo di sequenze, la Licita di 3SA viene a perdere il suo significato naturale di proposta della Manche a SA e può essere utilmente usata per interrogare gli Assi, contenendo le risposte nel livello di 4 e risparmiando prezioso spazio utile. Una Baby Blackwood, appunto.
Roman Blackwood
La Roman Blackwood fu ideata da alcuni giocatori del Vecchio Blue Team per rispondere in maniera più esplicativa alla richiesta di Assi e alla eventuale successiva richiesta di Re.
La scala delle risposte era la seguente:
5♣ = 0 o 3 Assi
5♦ = 1 o 4 Assi
5♥ = 2 Assi dello stesso colore o dello stesso rango
5♠ = 2 Assi diversi per colore e rango
L'idea di fondo era quella di facilitare la lettura della mano in presenza di Void.
Roman Baby Blackwood
Come la Baby Blackwood quando la scala delle risposte tiene conto del Rango della Coppia di Assi.

In 1934, an article signed by 'Wormwood' was published on
Bridge World, the worldwide most-popular bridge magazine of all times.
Under that nickname, Mr. Blackwood, one of the modern-bridge founder, was hidden, and since then, the convention was named 'Blackwood'.
The article proposed to use the 4NT bid to check for a sufficient Aces number available on a line for slam bidding.
Blackwood suggested answering the 4NT Aces request with the following rule:
5♣ = 0 o 4 Aces
5♦ = 1 Ace
5♥ = 2 Aces
5♠ = 3 Aces
In the following times many other alternative rules have been defined, among which we recall:

The Roman Blackwood was created by some players of the Old Blue Team to respond more explicitly to the request of Aces and King.
The scale of responses was as follows:
5♣ = 0 o 3 Aces
5♦ = 1 o 4 Aces
5♥ = 2 Aces same rank or color
5♠ = 2 Aces different in rank or color
The idea was to facilitate the reading of the hand in the presence of Void.
Blackwood as the Baby when the scale of the response takes into account the rank of Aces.
