Questa complessa convenzione è stata proposta oltre mezzo secolo fa senza troppo successo dall'inglese Jack Marx, uno dei teorici precursori della moderna dichiarazione.
Da essa prendono ispirazione sia la Roman Blackwood che la mia DFI.
Marx propose con grande lungimiranza per il tempo in cui lo fece, di ricercare nella dichiarazione oltre al Colore di Atout esplicitamente concordato, un secondo Colore Chiave o un secondo Colore semi-chiave.
Il Colore Chiave è un secondo colore dichiarato in senso naturale da un astante ed appoggiato dal partner (ad esempio, nella sequenza: 1♦ - 1♠ - 2♠ - 3♦, picche è l'Atout e quadri è il colore chiave).
Il Colore Semi-chiave è un colore a fronte della cui dichiarazione in senso naturale il partner ha replicato con SA ( ad esempio nella sequenza: 1♠ - 2SA - 3♦ - 4♦, quadri è l'Atout e picche è il colore chiave).
Stabilito quanto sopra, la 4SA Byzantine prevede due differenti sviluppi a seconda del fatto che siano stati identificati un Colore di Atout ed un Colore Chiave:

It is inspired by both the Roman Blackwood my DFI.
Marx suggested, with great foresight for the time when he did, to seek the declaration in addition to color Atout expressly agreed, a second color or a second key seed color key.
The Color Key is a second color stated in natural way by a player and supported by partners (i.e. in sequence: 1♦ - 1♠ - 2♠ - 3♦, spades is the trump and diamonds is the color key).
The color is a semi-key color in the face of that statement to the natural partner responded with NT (i.e. in sequence: 1♠ - 2NT - 3♦ - 4♦, diamonds and spades are the trump and the key color).
Established the above, the Byzantine 4SA provides two different developments depending on whether they were identified and a color Trump a Color Key:
