Lo svedese Jan Wohlin (1924 - luglio 1999) fu la punta di diamante della Svezia negli anni dell’immediato dopoguerra.

 Jan fece parte della formazione scandinava prese parte alla Bermuda Bowl nel 1950 e nel 1953 arrivando al bronzo  rappresentando l'Europa la prima volta e all'argento, rappresentando la Svezia, nella seconda.

 Jan si affermò nel Campionato Europeo del 1952 dopo aver conquistato la piazza d’onore negli anni ‘48, ‘49 e ‘50. E proprio nel 1952, in Irlanda, «The Fat Boy» (come era noto per la sua mole non indifferente), guidò la squadra svedese alla conquista dell’alloro continentale al termine di una finale giusto contro l’Italia, superata di appena due match-points.

 Ha anche vinto il Campionato Mondiale Individuale del 1954.

 Ritiratosi dalle competizioni, pubblicò diversi volumi dedicati al gioco della carta che ebbero una buona fortuna e scrisse per le riviste specializzate di tutta Europa.

 Una rubrica dal nome "Le smazzate di Wohlin" è comparsa per anni sulle pagine di “Bridge d’Italia” a partire dal 1973.

Jan Wohlin of Sweden (1924 - 1999), was, for more than quarter of a century, the supplier of the “Four Hand” column service to IBPA.

Your Editor’s earliest IBPA Bulletin, September 1968, contains Wohlin Hands, and the supply lasted until March 1994. In this capacity his deals were used in newspapers throughout the world under the byline of other authors.

As such he has a claim to be the bridge journalist whose copy reached more readers than any other.

Yet his name was not well known to the general bridge public.

He was a co-inventor of the EFOS system and the books Winning Pairs Technique and Play Safe - and Win.

He played in the 1950 Bermuda Bowl, won the European Team Championship in Dublin in 1952, won the unofficial world championship in Monte Carlo in 1954, won the Swedish National teams ten times, and the Pairs championship eight times.

In Sweden was called “Uncle” or “The Fat Boy”.
