Le personalità del bridge

Chung Ching Wei, nacque il 12 luglio del 1914 ad Hangchow nella Sheng County in Cina, e ricevette la sua educazione presso la Shanghai Jiao Tong University dove si laureò in ingegneria elettrica.

Durante il secondo conflitto mondiale, Charles Wei si trasferì negli Stati Uniti come diplomatico e, qualche anno più tardi, ebbe molto successo come imprenditore navale e nel 1957 prese la cittadinanza americana.

Affascinato dal bridge dedicò tutto se stesso alla costruzione di un nuovo sistema licitativo a base di Fiori Forte che inizialmente chiamò "China Bidding System" e che, successivamente, grazie anche alla collaborazione del grande Allan Truscott si trasformò nel celebre "Precision System".

Il suo Precision ebbe, però, grande successo solo dopo che la squadra di Taiwan da lui capitanata, conquistò, del tutto inaspettatamente, la medaglia d'argento nella Bermuda Bowl del 1969, proprio, giocando il suo sistema. Piazzamento che la squadra di Taiwan ripeté, poi, anche l'anno successivo.

Dopo questa coppia di successi, la favolosa coppia Belladonna-Garozzo, asse portante della squadra italiana del vecchio Blue Team, adottò il sistema elaborandone una variante il "Super Precision" che rese famoso il Sistema di Wei anche da questa parte dell'Oceano.

Charles, che fu il primo marito della grande campionessa Katie Wei Sender alla quale insegnò il bridge, morì il 20 febbraio del 1987.

Wei was born in 1914 in Sheng County, Zhejiang Province, China. He received his B.E. in electrical engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1936. In 1942, during World War II, he went to the United States.

After the war, he became a successful entrepreneur in the shipping industry.

In 1965, Wei invented the China bidding system, later called the Precision Club bidding system. But since he was not an expert at that time, his system did not attract much attention from the bridge community. This remained the case until the Republic of China team, that was trained and led by Wei, finished as runner-up in the 1969 Bermuda Bowl world team championship, in the process beating the strong North America team. The fact they were also finalists in the same championship the following year made Wei an outstanding figure in the world of bridge.

After that, the Italian Blue Team also adopted the Precision Club bidding system and kept their dominant status for nearly 20 years. The great success of the system began a wave of strong club systems all over the world.
