Rita Kennedy in Shugart è nata nel 1943 a Pebble Beach ed ha vissuto tutta la sua vita in California. Sposata con Alan Field Shugart, il fondatore della Seagate Technology fino alla di lui morte avvenuta all'età di 74 anni nel 2006.
Prima di conoscere il bridge, Rita ha avuto molti interessi che hanno svariato dall'allevamento di animali da compagnia, all'arte nella quale si è messa in luce come ritrattista (sulla destra in basso potete ammirare una sua opera intitolata "Harrison").
Nel bridge Rita ha avuto il merito di mettere insieme una delle più forti squadre americane che ha capitanato in diverse importanti manifestazioni e con la quale prima donna nella storia del Cavendish, nel 1994 ha vinto il Torneo a Squadre.
Come giocatrice, la Shugart che ha giocato spesso in coppia con il defunto marito, vanta sul piano nazionale due coppe Reisinger vinte nel 1998 a Orlando e nel 1999 a Boston, anno in cui ha fatto l'accoppiata conquistando anche il Victor Mitchell Trophy.

Before knowing the bridge, Rita has had many varied interests that have the herd of pets, in which art is highlighted as a portraitist (on the right you can see one of his works entitled "Harrison").
In Bridge Rita had the merit of putting together one of the strongest American teams that have led to several important events and she won, which first woman in the history, the Cavendish Teams.
As a player, Shugart has the two cups domestically Reisinger won in Orlando in 1998 and in Boston in 1999 where the couple did winning a Trophy Victor Mitchell.
