Phillip  ALDER

Nato il 22 settembre 1951 a Alton in Inghilterra, dopo aver vissuto a lungo a Londra, nel 1985 si trasferì negli Stati Uniti dove successe al grande Jim Jacoby come articolista di bridge della Newspaper Enterprise Association.

 Oggi vive da novembre ad aprile a Hobe Sound in Florida e il resto dell'anno a Saint Louis nel Missouri.

 Uomo dai molteplici interessi, Phillip si è occupato nel corso della sua vita di Formula Uno, tennis, golf, cricket, baseball e teatro.

 Nel mondo del bridge egli è noto soprattutto come articolista e scrittore.

 Membro della ACBL National Appeals Committee, Life Master sia della WBF che della EBU, valente scrittore di bridge, Phillip collabora con le riviste della Federazione di molti Paesi tra i quali l'Italia e fa parte dello staff editoriale di Bridge Magazine.

 Noto a molti giocatori di tutto il mondo per aver ideato le aperture preventive in sottocolore, Alder è anche stato coach delle squadre egiziana e pakistana.

Come giocatore ha conquistato molto trofei nazionali in Gran Bretagna ed alcuni altri negli States, inoltre, ha più volte rappresentato i due Paesi nelle competizioni internazionali.

Nel 2012 ha guidato da capitano non giocatore la Nazionale Seniores USA all'argento nelle Olimpiadi.

(b.1951) Of New York, formerly of London, England, self-employed Bridge Journalist, succeeded Jim Jacoby as bridge columnist with Newspaper Enterprise Association. Educated at U College, where he was an honors student, and Institute of Education both in London.

Today he lives from November to April in Hobe Sound, Florida, and the rest of the year in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Alder's other interests include Formula 1 Grand Prix racing, tennis, golf, cricket, baseball, American football, wine, travel, cats, West End theatre and the stories of P G Wodehouse. Served as a member of GNYBA board of Directors, member of ACBL National Appeals Committee, member of conventions working party of English Bridge Union.

Life Master both in England and the US. At the time he became a Life Master in England he was the second youngest ever to attain that rank. He authored You Can Play Bridge, was a principal analyst on the World Champions Books for 1986, 87 & 88, has written and/or edited with Alan Truscott, Dr George Rosenkratz, Bill Root and Zia Mahmood.

Regular contributor to ACBL Bulletin, New Zealand Bridge, The Bridge World, Australia Bridge IBPA Bulletin, Bridge d'Italia and Diversion (a medical publication). Editor of Bridge Magazine 1980-85, editor at many World, European, Common Market and Zone 4 Championships. Contributing editor to Bridge Encyclopedia.

Author of Get Smarter at Bridge. Winner of a BOLs brilliancy prize for journalism in 1979 and Royal Viking Line Player of the year (1986). Invented Alder Transfer Preempts. He has acted as a vugraph commentator at international events and coached teams from Egypt and Pakistan to prepare them for international competition.

Represented England in the Camrose Trophy in 1980 and in the Junior Camrose in 1971, 1972, the Junior European Championship in 1972, Common Market Championships 1974, and the Junior Common Market Championships 1976.

British national victories include Junior Pairs Championship and anglo American Junior Pairs Championship 1971, Junior Teams Championship 1972, Two star Pairs 1973, Crockford's Cup 1984. In the US his victories include Spring secondary Non smoking Swiss 1987 and the Von Zedwitz Double KO 1987.

In 2012 he is the coach of USA Senior Teams that earned silver medal in the Olympiads.
