Un evento originariamente biennale ad inviti chiamato World Master Individual è stato organizzato dalla World Bridge Federation con la sponsorizzazione delle Generali a partire dal 1992 sia pure, nella prima edizione, con la sola partecipazioni di giocatori Europei

 L'evento che dal 2000 è stato disputato nei soli anni bisestili, è riservato alle Categorie Open e Women  e nella sola edizione del 2000 è stato aperto anche agli Juniores

 Per la verità una manifestazione ad inviti simile ad un Campionato del Mondo individuale fu organizzata dal campione francese Pierre Albarran su richiesta della "Société de Bains de Mer" nel 1954 e vi presero parte 28 tra i giocatori più forti del momento. 

Il Generali World Master fu dismesso dopo l'ultima edizione del 2008.
