Nato il 28 marzo del 1901 a New York City e laureato in ingegneria al MIT di Boston, Al è stato una delle maggiori personalità del mondo del bridge negli anni a cavallo della seconda guerra mondiale.
Nel 1935 quando il generale Alfred M. Gruenther lo presentò come suo successore come direttore capo del Campionato degli Stati Orientali, iniziò la sua carriera e divenne un Direttore di torneo conosciuto in larga parte del mondo. Scrittore dotato di elegante arguzia, fu membro della ACBL Law Commission nel 1943 e suo Membro Onorario per il 1949.
Al sposò la grandissima Helen Smith, che per questo e nonostante la successiva separazione, è conosciuta dai bridgisti di tutto il mondo come Helen Sobel.
Lavorò nel team del grande Culbertson fianco a fianco con personalità quali Morehead, Sheinwold e Alphonse Moyse jr.
Collaborò per molte riviste e fu anche co-editore dell'ACBL Bulletin e di alcune riviste pubblicate sulla West Coast. Dette anche un notevole contributo nella redazione della Bridge Encyclopedia.
Morì il primo maggio del 1972
Nel 1999 la ACBL gli ha concesso l'onore di far parte della Hall of Fame del Bridge americano.
Born on March 28, 1901 in New York City and graduated in engineering at MIT in
Boston , Al was one of the biggest personalities in the world of bridge in the
years of World War II.
In 1935, when General Alfred M. Gruenther introduced him as his successor as chief director of the championship of the Eastern States, he began his career and became a Director of tournament known in much of the world.
Writer comes with stylish wit, he was a member of the ACBL Law Commission in 1943 and its Honorary Member for 1949.
Married to the great Helen Smith, who for this and despite the subsequent separation, is known by bridge players from all over the world as Helen Sobel.
He worked in the team of the largest Culbertson alongside personalities such Morehead, Sheinwold and Alphonse Moyse , Jr.
He worked for many magazines and was also co-editor of several journals published on the West Coast and of the ACBL Bulletin. Such a significant contribution in drafting the Bridge Encyclopedia.
He died May 1, 1972.
In 1999, the ACBL has granted him the honor of being part of the Hall of Fame of the American Bridge.
