Mike Jerrold Smolen è nato il 18 novembre del 1940 nell'area di Chicago ed è stato un teorico ed un giocatore americano di successo.

 Consumò la sua carriera bridgistica ad Alamo e fu l'inventore della celebre convenzione che porta il suo nome.

 World International Master vinse 5 NABC tra i quali ricordiamo la Reisinger nel 1984, il Jacoby nel 1982 ed il Mitchell nel 1976.

 Nel 1982 vinse il Fishbein Trophy.

 Scomparve prematuramente il 25 novembre del 1992 a Los Angeles.
