Erik Paulsen è nato nel 1926 a Oslo in Norvegia e si è trasferito negli Stati Uniti nell'immediato dopoguerra.
Nel 1972 sposò Ada che, al di fuori degli impegni con la nazionale, era la sua partner preferita.
Erik ebbe il suo momento di massimo splendore negli anni '70 quando vinse la Bermuda Bowl del 1976 ed arrivò secondo in quella dell'anno successivo. Sempre in quel decennio vinse alcuni NABC tra cui ricordiamo le Reisinger del 1962, 68, 74, 75.
Alla fine degli anni '70 abbandonò il bridge agonistico per dedicarsi alla sua carriera professionale presso la Rockwell Engineering.
Nel 1987 riuscì a pensionarsi e passò il resto della sua vita come aveva sempre desiderato tra i campi da golf ed i tavoli di bridge del Sud della California.
É scomparso il 28 aprile del 2013.

Erik had its moment of maximum splendor in the 70s when he won the Bermuda Bowl in 1976 and finished second in the following year. Also in that decade won some NABC offer including the Reisinger of '62, '68,'74 e '75. At the end of the 70s he left the bridge racing to pursue his professional career at Rockwell Engineering.
In 1987 he was able to retire and spent the rest of his life he had always wanted one of the golf courses and the tables of bridge.
He disappeared in 2013.
