Jo e Ely Culbertson

Smazzata  593

Jo and Ely Culbertson Deal  593

Here’s one illustrating the battle of wits between P. Hal Sims and Josephine Culbertson during the famous Sims-Culbertson match in 1935.

Sims was playing with his wife, Dorothy. Jo was playing with her husband, Ely.

Jo Culbertson opened the 5, Sims played dummy’s three and Culbertson’s 10 won the trick.

A heart return put Sims in; he drew trumps and then led a club, which Mrs. Culbertson won with the ace.

She promptly led the 4.

Sims gave the matter some thought, but finally decided that Joe would not underlead the same ace twice. So he played the jack, and the Q won.

Culbertson returned a spade, and Jo’s ace won the setting trick.

The microphone through which every bid, play and remark was transmitted by radio to the world stood at Culbertson’s right. He leaned over and said, “It is a very rare but a very great pleasure to fool Papa Sims. In this instance, Mrs. Culbertson fooled him twice on the same hand. It has never been done before.”
