Stanley Smith nacque nel 1915 e fu un esperto ragioniere ed uno stimato funzionario governativo.

Nel 1949 fu colpito da poliomielite e fu costretto a passare il resto della sua vita su una sedia a rotelle.

Nonostante questo handicap ed il lavoro che lo assorbiva molto, era presente in quasi tutti gli appuntamenti importanti del bridge USA.

Giocatore di livello, vedovo di Helen Sobel, forse la più grande giocatrice di tutti i tempi, nel 1971 si risposò con Phyllis che lo accompagnò amorevolmente in tutti i Tornei ai quali partecipava fino al momento della sua scomparsa avvenuta a Detroit, città dove viveva, a causa di un'insufficienza renale conseguenza di un intervento chirurgico.
