Karl  SCHNEIDER

 

 Karl Schneider nacque nel 1904 e a buon diritto fece parte del novero dei magnifici giocatori del bridge danubiano.

 Negli anni prima della grande guerra, Austria e Ungheria avevano messo a punto dei nuovi sistemi licitativi attorno ai quali fiorirono un gruppo di straordinari giocatori che in Europa non lasciarono spazio ad alcuno e che durante i Campionati Europei/Mondiali del 1937, riuscirono anche ad aver ragione delle imbattibili squadre americane.

 Karl divenne campione mondiale a 33 anni e nel 1938 fu costretto a rifugiarsi in Gran Bretagna a causa delle persecuzioni naziste, tornato in Patria l'anno successivo, vi restò intrappolato a causa della guerra e sebbene sospettato di giudaismo riuscì a sottrarsi alle deportazioni e tornò a giocare vittoriosamente dopo la sconfitta nazista conquistando la medaglia d'argento ai Campionati Mondiali del 1954.

 Prima di espatriare definitivamente sposò una donna ebrea al solo scopo di evitarle la deportazione.

 Fu Campione d'Europa nel 1936 e nel 1937, vice Campione nel 1951 e nel 1957, medaglia di bronzo nel 1954 e 1956.

 Scomparve nel 1977 dopo aver lasciato un'orma indelebile nel Bridge mondiale.
