Richard  LEDERER

 Richard Lederer è stato una delle figure di maggior spicco del bridge britannico e, negli anni '30 dello scorso secolo, certamente il giocatore più forte dell'impero britannico.

 Nato in Ungheria nel 1894 e stranamente trascurato dalla cronaca bridgistica inglese per lungo tempo, Richard, marito di Peggy e padre di Tony, è stato l'unico componente della squadra inglese che ha saputo tener testa validamente al Culbertson Team durante la seconda celebre sfida del 1934 per la Schwab Cup, una specie di vera e propria anteprima del Campionato del Mondo.

 Durante i cinque giorni della sfida anglo-britannica, Lederer in coppia con W. Rose produsse uno score ottimo che fu però vanificato dalla cattiva prestazione dei compagni di squadra H. St J. Ingram ed S. E. Hughes, che non facevano parte dell'equipe di Lederer, che viene ricordata come la più forte squadra inglese di prima della guerra, ma che vinsero una selezione all'uopo creata per selezionare la miglior squadra da opporre a Culbertson e Soci.

Sua moglie Peggy e suo figlio Anthony furono entrambi validi bridgisti ed il secondo istituì quel "Richard Lederer Memorial Trophy" che ancora oggi ricorda suo padre.

Dick, che fu proprietario di uno dei più prestigiosi bridge club inglesi, scomparve nel 1941.

Dick Lederer (1894 - 1941), club proprietor and father figure to the rising elite of London player, it was only natural, when the contract bridge began not played, that those whom it first made famous were not necessarily its best exponents.

He must have been for many years one of the best bridge players in the country. But only during the last three years or so has his reputation been consonant whit his abilities. Today, however, he is generally recognized as one of English leading players;  an analyst of distinction; and as most successful team-of-four captain that British contract has produced.

Other stars in the card firmament have waxed and waned irregularly; but Lederer's, though long ignored by some of British expert, has shone with increasing steadiness; it is now as well-known to the pundits of the card world as is Vega to their brethren at Greenwich.

He is winner of European Cap (1933 & 1934), Camrose Cap (3 times), Gold Cup (3 times), Tollemache 1934, Natinal Pairs 1935.

Married with Peggy and father of Tony, both fine bridge players. Tony is a creator of the famous "Richard Lederer Memorial Trophy" in memory of his father.
