Gaetano la Rocca nacque a Palermo nel 1945 e dopo gli studi si dedicò alla carriera di assicuratore che lo portò in giro per tutta l'Italia.
Gli impegnativi ritmi di lavoro non furono sufficienti ad allontanarlo dalla sua grande passione, quel bridge che aveva cominciato a giocare da autodidatta non ancora ventenne.
Anzi, le peregrinazioni lavorative lo portarono a conoscere molti forti giocatori di altre città e a tesaurizzare le diverse tendenze in atto.
Fortemente dotato, pur da dilettante entrò a far parte del giro della nazionale vincendo i Campionati del MEC a Squadre nel 1977.
Il destino ingrato se lo portò via la notte del 27 giugno del 1980 mentre rientrava nella sua Palermo con il tristemente famoso volo ITAVIA proveniente da Bologna e abbattuto per un tragico errore.
Gaetano La Rocca was born in Palermo in 1945 and after his studies he
devoted himself to the insurer career that took him around the whole Italy.
The demanding pace of work were not sufficient to remove him from his great passion, the bridge that had begun to play how autodidact before of twenty years.
Indeed, working wanderings led him to meet many strong players to other cities and to treasure the diverse trends.
Heavily it equipped, even as an amateur became part of the national team winning the MEC Team Championships in 1977.
The ungrateful destiny carried him off the night of June 27, 1980 as he was returning in his Palermo with the infamous ITAVIA flight from Bologna torpedoed owing to a tragic mistake..
