Denis HOWARD

 Denis William Howard nacque il 29 agosto del 1932 e nella sua vita professionale è stato uno dei principali avvocati immobiliari di Sydney e il presidente nazionale di Mallesons Stephen Jaques, ora nota come King & Wood Mallesons.

 Sposato con Robin e padre di 4 figli, Denis ha sempre coniugato la sua professione con il mondo del bridge: è stato Presidente della NSWBA, dell'ABF e della WBF.

 Giornalista specializzato nel nostro gioco, è stato redattore del National Times, del Sidney Morning Herald e della Australian Bridge, la rivista federale di cui è stato anche l'editore fondatore.

 Come giocatore viene ricordato dalle cronache del suo Paese assieme a Tim Seres, Dick Cummings e Roelof Smirne, come una delle quattro super star dello scorso secolo.

 Prima di ritirarsi dal bridge agonistico nel 1976, aveva vinto tra l'altro, 6 titoli nazionali a coppie e 12 titoli nazionali a squadre, nonché, il bronzo ai Mondiali a Squadre del 1971.

 Denis che è stato anche più volte capitano non giocatore delle nazionali australiane e che in tale veste ha vinto il bronzo ai campionati del mondo del 1979, è scomparso a Sidney il 14 gennaio 2023.

Denis William Howard was born on 29 August 1932 and in his professional life was one of Sydney's leading property solicitors and the national chairman of Mallesons Stephen Jaques, now known as King & Wood Mallesons.

Married to Robin and father of 4 children, Denis has always combined his profession with the world of bridge: he has been President of the NSWBA, the ABF and the WBF.

A journalist specializing in our game, he was editor of the National Times, the Sydney Morning Herald and Australian Bridge, the federal magazine of which he was also the founding editor.

As a player he is remembered by the chronicles of the country of him together with Tim Seres, Dick Cummings and Roelof Smirne, as one of the four super stars of the last century.

Before retiring from competitive bridge in 1976, he had won, inter alia, 6 national pairs titles and 12 national team titles, as well as bronze at the 1971 World Team Championships.

Denis, who was also several times non-playing captain of the Australian national team and who in this capacity won bronze at the 1979 world championships, passed away in Sydney on 14 January 2023.
