Desmond  DEERY

 Desmond Deery nacque nel 1939 a Monaghan una città circa 130 km a nord di Dublino sita nell'omonima Contea che è una delle tre che fanno parte della Repubblica d'Irlanda ed è vicina al confine con l'Irlanda del Nord.

 In gioventù si trasferì a Belfast per studiare Legge alla Queen's University e alla giovane età di 24 anni partecipò con la Nazionale Irlandese agli Europei del 1962 e poco dopo alle Olimpiadi.

 Deery che ha lavorato come Procuratore Legale a Belfast, è stato uno dei migliori bridgisti irlandesi di tutti i tempi ed ha rappresentato l'Irlanda del Nord in oltre 40 incontri del Camrose.

 Pensionatosi si ritirò a Marbella dove aprì un noto Circolo di Bridge ancora oggi esistente in cui giocò e vinse anche il giorno prima di morire all'età di 75 anni.

 Guadagnata la cittadinanza spagnola difesi i colori di questo Paese d'adozione durante gli Europei del 1987 giocando in coppia con un altro celebre giocatore britannico naturalizzato spagnolo Joel Tarlo.

  Desmond Deery born 1939,  in Monaghan and he was one of  Ireland’s all-time leading bridge-players.

He moved to Belfast as a University student.

Desmond’s first international for Ireland was at the age of 24 at the 1962 Europeans in Beirut. His principal partner later, through the 70’s, was Eoin MacNeill.

In the Home Internationals for the Camrose Trophy, Northern Ireland competes separately from the Republic. Desmond had forty matches for Northern Ireland, beginning in 1960 through to 1983.

Desmond studied law at Queen’s University and worked as a solicitor in Belfast.

In 1984 he retired to Marbella where he ran the Marbella International Bridge Club. Irish bridge players were regular visitors to the club, welcomed with open arms.

Desmond played in the club weekly tournament, and won, the day before he died.

Desmond earned eligibility by residence for Spain and played in the 1987 European Championship for Spain partnering a former British international also resident in Spain, Joel Tarlo.

He has died in Marbella aged 75.
