 James Paul David "Jim" Bunning è nato il 23 ottobre del 1931 a Southgate nel Kentucky ed ha studiato prima alla Xavier High School e poi alla Xavier University.

 Jim è un ex giocatore di baseball e politico statunitense che prima di intraprendere la carriera politica, ha giocato nella Major League Baseball come lanciatore per 17 stagioni guadagnandosi l'elezione nella Hall of Fame del baseball.

 Sposato con Mary Catherine Theis ha avuto 9 figli ed è un senatore repubblicano.

  Amante del bridge partecipò alla famosa sfida che alcuni atleti americani di altri sport lanciarono agli Aces nel 1972.
