Questa convenzione porta in Italia il nome del campionissimo torinese Alfredo Versace perché fu il primo a presentarla in Italia durante un Corso, ma, in realtà, si tratta di una rielaborazione fatta da e con Lorenzo Lauria, di una novità introdotta nel bridge agonistico dagli americani da Steve Robinson e Kit Woolsey. All'estero è maggiormente conosciuta con il nome del primo.

Certamente questa convenzione, che si unisce alle tante ideate per non dover subire passivamente l'apertura di 1SA risulta più efficace se usata sulla versione debole dell'apertura (12-14PO).

In breve la convenzione Versace suggerisce questo modello di comportamento del secondo di mano:

La convenzione comporta che con Mano Bilanciata si passa e questo comporta la necessità di Riaprire in 4ª posizione anche con poco e con Mano Bilanciata eliminando gli interventi con quarta nobile e quinta minore.

Con questo piccolo accorgimento, la convenzione è tra le migliori della sua famiglia.
