Con queste carte, 3SA sarebbe un pessimo contratto facilmente penalizzabile di una o più prese, mentre, lo slam a fiori presenta delle accettabile prospettive di riuscita.
Una Bluhmer di Nord è davvero molto efficace perché, mostra all'apertore che non ci sono punti sprecati a cuori e che, proprio per questo, la tenuta a cuori, nonostante la prima risposta, è del tutto virtuale.
La Bluhmer, in un sol colpo, riesce a sviare l'apertore dalla Manche a SA e a indirizzarlo sulla strada dello Slam a fiori.
Ma l'Apertore come può proseguire la licita dopo una Bluhmer ?

Nord, dopo aver mostrato il fit 4-4 a picche, risponde alla cue bid dell'apertore mostrando interesse per lo Slam a picche a condizione che in Linea non ci siano punti sprecati nel suo primo colore di risposta, nel quale, evidentemente, ha quattro o più cartine prive di Onori.
This not well known convention has something similar to the Splinter and is due to the American player Lou Bluhm.
When the rare opportunity comes it may be really very useful.
The convention may be adopted when the Opener shows a three suits hand, in a clear misfit situation stated by the Answerer with a NT bid: the convention takes place using an unusual jump done by the Answerer in the first suit answered.
Two only possible sequences may be used by the Bluhmer:

In the two sequences the Answerer jump cannot show a strong hand neither a long hearts suit, as these two possibilities have been both excluded by his previous bid 1NT, that could be passed by the Opener.
The jump in delayed repetition shows, instead, a great fit in the last suit of the Opener and almost total absence of values in his first suit.

With these cards 3NT would be a vary bad contract, easily beatable by one or more tricks. Clubs game or even slam, instead, show sensible possibilities.
A Bluhmer from North is really very effective as it shows to the Opener there are no wasted HCP in hearts and, because of this, hearts force in spite of the first answer, is totally virtual.
The Bluhmer, in one snap, tears off the Opener from a NT game and pushes him toward clubs game or slam.
But how does the Opener keep up bidding after a Bluhmer ?
