Godfrey Herbert WINN

 

 Godfrey Herbert Winn è nato il 15 ottobre del 1906 a Birmingham ed è stato un giornalista conosciuto anche come scrittore ed attore.

 Dopo aver frequentato la King Edward School di Birmingham ha iniziato la sua carriera di attore in teatro girando anche diversi film.

 Mai sposato, nel 1939 fu corrispondente di guerra sulla Linea Maginot.

 Come scrittore ha scritto diverse novelle ed è stato anche articolista  del Daily Mirror e del Sunday Express.

 Ottimo tennista e buon giocatore fu iniziato al bridge da Somerset Maugham.

 Winn morì il 19 giugno del 1971 di un attacco di cuore mentre giocava a tennis nella sua casa di Brighton

  Godfrey Herbert Winn (15 October 1906 – 19 June 1971) born in Birmingham, England, he went to King Edward's School, Birmingham.

 His career as a theatre actor began as a boy actor at the Haymarket Theatre and appeared in many plays and films He went on to write a number of novels and biographical works, and became a star columnist for the Daily Mirror and the Sunday Express newspapers, where he wrote "Dear Abby" articles for lovelorn women, but was never married himself.

Journalists nicknamed him 'Winifred God' because of his popularity with women readers.

In 1939 was the first British war correspondent to cross the Maginot Line. He served as a Royal Navy able seaman, during WW2, on HMS Ganges. His book PQ17 was an account of his experiences on Convoy PQ 17 during the Second World War.

After the war he wrote numerous books and magazine articles, and appeared on radio and television as well as in films. He frequently compered the BBC Radio show Housewives' Choice, with David Jacobs, from the early 1950s to the mid 1960s. He was a friend of W. Somerset Maugham and it is said that the character George Potter in Maugham's 1941 book Strictly Personal was based on him.

Great tennis player and a good bridge player he was initiated to bridge by Somerset Maugham.

Winn died from a heart attack at the age of 64, while playing tennis at home in Brighton. His only known companion was a pet dog.
