William Pole nacque il 22 aprile del 1814 a Birmingham e fu un ingegnere ed uno scrittore scientifico inglese di chiara fama.

Dopo i primi anni spesi in patria, nel 1844 emigrò verso l'India dove organizzò il primo corso di ingegneria per i nativi presso l'Elphinstone College of Bombay.
Rientrato in patria 4 anni più tardi, anche a causa delle sue condizioni di salute non eccellenti, si mise in luce per le sue conoscenze scientifiche fino a guadagnare diversi incarichi governativi e, nel 1861, la nomina alla Royal Society.
Fin da giovane fu un apprezzato organista e nel 1879 descrisse le sue idee in proposito pubblicando una "Philosophy of Music".
La sua eccellente preparazione matematica, nonché la sua poliedricità d'ingegno, lo portò a studiare le leggi del Whist e a divenire un'autorità riconosciuta in materia, tanto da venir considerato parte della famosa "Triade", assieme a Cavendish e James Clay.
Nel 1883 non mancò di mettere nero su bianco le sue esperienze di eccellente giocatore scrivendo anche una "Philosophy of Whist".
Scomparve il 30 dicembre del 1900.
William Pole was born in 1814 and was an engineer and a well-known British science writer.
After the first year spent at home, in 1844 he emigrated to India where he organized the first engineering course for the natives at the Elphinstone College in Bombay.
Returning to his homeland four years later, partly because of his health is not excellent, he set light to his scientific knowledge to earn several government posts and, in 1861, the appointment of the Royal Society.
