James Clay nacque il 20 dicembre del 1804 a Londra e morì a Brighton il 26 dicembre del 1873.

 Studiò a Winchester e Oxford, sposò la cantante lirica Eliza Camilla Woolrych che gli diede 6 figli tra cui Frederic (foto a dx), che divenne un noto compositore.

 Uomo politico fu eletto nel 1847 per la città di Hull, una città dello Yorkshire affacciata sul delta del fiume Humber, e nel 1853 subì un indagine amministrativa che lo privò della carica fino al 1857 quando, dopo averla riacquistata, la conservò fino alla sua morte.

 Clay fu, per gli ultimi trenta anni della sua vita, un'autorità mondiale indiscussa sul Whist, ne studiò le leggi e scrisse alcuni trattati sul gioco. Fu anche Presidente di un Associazione che aveva il compito di scriverne le Leggi.

 Fu anche un esperto di "Piquet", un altro gioco che si disputava tra due contendenti con un mazzo di 32 carte.

James Clay was born on December 20, 1804 in London and died in Brighton on 26 December 1873.

He was educated at Winchester and Oxford, he married the opera singer Eliza Camilla Woolrych who bore him six children including Frederic (pictured right), who became a renowned composer.

Politician was elected in 1847 for the city of Hull, a Yorkshire town overlooking the delta of the Humber River, and in 1853 underwent an administrative investigation that deprived him of the office until 1857 when, after buying it, kept it until his death.

Clay was, for the last thirty years of his life, a world authority undisputed on the Whist, he studied law and wrote some treatises on the game. He was also President of an Association whose task was to write the laws.
