Jonathan  MESTEL

 

 Andrew Jonathan Mestel (Cambridge, 13 marzo 1957) è un matematico e scacchista inglese, figlio dell'astronomo Leon Mestel.

 Noto anche come Jon Mestel, è professore di matematica applicata all'Imperial College di Londra, e si occupa di magnetoidrodinamica e di fluidodinamica biologica.

 Ha ottenuto il dottorato con una tesi sulla "Levitazione magnetica di metalli liquidi" presso l'Università di Cambridge.

 Si è distinto come giocatore di scacchi. nel 1974 quando vinse il Campionato del mondo giovanile; vinse anche quattro volte il Campionato britannico (nel 1974, 1976, 1983 e 1988).

 Tra il 1976 e il 1988, Mestel ha rappresentato sei volte l'Inghilterra nelle Olimpiadi degli scacchi, vincendo l'oro individuale nelle Olimpiadi di Salonicco del 1984.

 Nel 1982 ottenne il titolo  di Grande Maestro Internazionale attribuito dalla FIDE.

 Mestel ha anche il titolo di Grande Maestro in Problem Solving and Chess Studies, ed è stato la prima persona della storia a ricevere questi due titoli insieme.

 Mestel è anche un giocatore di bridge che ha rappresentato l'Inghilterra in alcune competizioni internazionali.

 

  Andrew Jonathan Mestel (Cambridge, March 13, 1957) is an English mathematician and chess player. He is the son of the astronomer Leon Mestel.

Also known as Jon Mestel, he is Professor of Applied Mathematics at Imperial College London, and deals with magnetohydrodynamics and biological fluid dynamics. He obtained his doctorate with a thesis on "Magnetic Levitation of Liquid Metals" from the University of Cambridge.

He distinguished himself as a chess player. In 1974 he won the World Youth Chess Championship; he also won the British Championship four times (in 1974, 1976, 1983 and 1988). Between 1976 and 1988, Mestel represented England six times in the chess Olympics, winning individual gold in the 1984 Thessaloniki Olympics.

In 1982 he obtained the title of International Grand Master attributed by FIDE.

Mestel also holds the title of Grand Master in Problem Solving and Chess Studies, and was the first person in history to receive these two titles together. In 2007 he won the Solution World Championship, having been third in 2002 and second in 2005.

Mestel is also a bridge player who has represented England in some international competitions.
