 James Mates è nato l'11 agosto del 1961 a Londra dove vive con la moglie Fiona e con i loro tre figli.

 Figlio di Michael, un politico conservatore, ha studiato al Marlborough College ed al l'Università di Leeds dove ha preso una laurea in Storia e Politica.

 Giornalista televisivo di fama internazionale ha lavorato presso la Independent Television News dove ha presentato ITN News.

 Del bridge gliene parlò Fiona, allora sua fidanzata, durante una colazione in un ristorante e da allora non è infrequente trovarlo nei migliori circoli di Londra e di Washington.

 Oltre al bridge James ama giocare a tennis e andare in mountain bike.

 James è stato uno delle otto celebrità che hanno partecipato al famoso serial televisivo "Celebrity Grand Slam".
