Paolo MANTOVANI

 Nato a Roma il 9 aprile del 1930, ivi visse sino alla fine della guerra. Sfollato a Cremona, si trasferì a Genova nel 1955: giunto nel capoluogo ligure, fu assunto come dipendente dalla Cameli Petroli. Si affermò come imprenditore negli anni '70 commerciando petrolio negli anni della crisi energetica con la sua società Pontoil, fondata insieme a i due soci Renzo Noli e Mario Contini.

 Il 3 luglio 1979 acquistò la Sampdoria, portandola nel giro di pochi anni dalla Serie B ai vertici del calcio italiano ed europeo: prima di diventarne presidente, Mantovani entrò nella società come addetto stampa, ricoprendo tale ruolo per tre anni, dal 1973 al 1976. Sotto la sua presidenza la Sampdoria vinse tre Coppe Italia (1985, 1988 e 1989 con la quarta Coppa Italia del 1994, anche se avvenuta dopo la sua scomparsa, che si può attribuire a lui visto che costruì quella rosa), una Coppa delle Coppe nel 1990, lo scudetto nella stagione 1990-1991 e la Supercoppa Italiana nel 1991. Altri risultati prestigiosi furono il raggiungimento di un'altra finale di Coppa delle Coppe nel 1989, di due finali di Coppa Italia nel 1986 e nel 1991, della finale di Supercoppa Europea del 1990, delle finali di Supercoppa Italiana nel 1988, 1989 e 1994 e della finale di Coppa dei Campioni nel 1992.

 Portò in Italia giocatori internazionali del calibro di Graeme Souness, Trevor Francis, Srecko Katanec, Oleksij Mychajlycenko e Vladimir Jugovic, ma si distinse anche per la scoperta, grazie anche all'aiuto dei suoi due storici direttori sportivi Claudio Nassi e Paolo Borea, di giovani quali Roberto Mancini, Gianluca Vialli, Moreno Mannini, Fausto Pari, Attilio Lombardo, Luca Pellegrini, Gianluca Pagliuca e Pietro Vierchowod. Riuscì, anno dopo anno, a costruire una squadra di giovani talenti, di giocatori d'esperienza e di classe portando la compagine blucerchiata tra le formazioni più forti e blasonate non solo in Italia ma anche in Europa.

Nella sua carriera da imprenditore è stato coinvolto in alcuni processi dai quali, tuttavia, è sempre uscito assolto.

Mantovani è ricordato come dirigente sportivo per il suo fair play, per la sagacia con cui seppe dirigere la società calcistica e per lo splendido rapporto che ebbe sia con i tifosi blucerchiati sia con tutti i giocatori che militarono nella Sampdoria durante gli anni della sua presidenza.

Morì il 14 ottobre 1993 a causa di un cancro ai polmoni: il funerale venne celebrato sabato 16 ottobre nella Chiesa di Santa Teresa, nel quartiere di Albaro. Alla cerimonia parteciparono migliaia di persone in lacrime per rendergli omaggio. La cerimonia funebre comprese un jazz funeral con l'intervento della Heritage Hall Marching Band, appositamente convocata da New Orleans e che suonò What a Friend We Have in Jesus di Charles Crozat Converse. Tale cerimonia venne disposta da Mantovani stesso, che quando era stato operato a Phoenix nel 1982 per ridurre gli effetti di un infarto aveva conosciuto questa simpatica usanza.

La presidenza venne assunta dal figlio Enrico Mantovani. Oltre a Enrico aveva altri 3 figli: Francesca (organizzatrice di viaggi, 1961), Filippo (ex team manager della Samp nel 1995-1996 e oggi talent scout a Barcellona per la Spagna e il Sudamerica, 1966) e Ludovica (organizzatrice di eventi ed ex responsabile marketing della Samp, 1971).

Il 6 luglio 2004 il Comune di Genova ha deciso di dedicargli una via cittadina nei pressi del centro commerciale Fiumara di Sampierdarena. A suo nome, nel febbraio 2007, è stata intitolata anche una via di Roma nel quartiere Ardeatino.

A Bogliasco gli è stato dedicato un altorilievo in bronzo, con il denaro raccolto dai tifosi, raffigurante Mantovani e i principali calciatori protagonisti delle vittorie del periodo 1984-1994, mentre festeggiano una coppa, con la scritta "A Paolo...". In suo onore, il noto Torneo Ravano, al quale partecipano ogni anno migliaia di alunni appartenenti alle scuole elementari liguri, è stato ribattezzato Torneo Ravano - Coppa Mantovani.

Paolo Mantovani era anche un amane del bridge e lo si vedeva spesso nella sale del bridge club di Varazze.

He brought Italian players of international caliber Graeme Souness , Trevor Francis , Srečko Katanec , Oleksij Mychajlyčenko and Vladimir Jugović , but also was known for the discovery, with the help of its two historic sports directors Claudio Nassi and Paolo Borea, young such as Roberto Mancini , Gianluca Vialli , Moreno Mannini , Fausto Pari , Attilio Lombardo , Luca Pellegrini , Gianluca Pagliuca and Pietro Vierchowod . Mantovani is remembered as sports manager for his fair play , to the sagacity with which he lead the football club and the wonderful relationship that he had with both Sampdoria fans be with all the players who served in the Sampdoria during the years of his presidency. He died on 14th October 1993 due to lung cancer: the funeral was held Saturday, October 16 in the church of Santa Teresa, in the district of Albaro . The ceremony attended by thousands of people in tears to give him glory. The funeral ceremony including a jazz funeral with the intervention of the Heritage Hall Marching Band, specially convened to New Orleans and who played What a Friend We Have in Jesus by Charles Crozat Converse . This ceremony was arranged by Mantovani himself, that when he underwent surgery in Phoenix in 1982 to reduce the effects of a heart attack had known this delightful custom. The presidency was assumed by his son Enrico Mantovani . Besides Henry had three other children: Francesca (organizer of trips, 1961 ), Filippo (former Sampdoria team manager in 1995-1996 and now talent scout in Barcelona for Spain and South America, 1966 ) and Ludovica (event organizer and former marketing manager of Samp, 1971).

On July 6, 2004 the Municipality of Genoa has decided to dedicate a city street near the Fiumara Mall Sampierdarena . In his name, in February 2007 , it was also named a street in Rome , on Via Erminio Spalla , in the district Ardeatino , where the contractor is referred to as "Paolo Mantovani: President of Sampdoria (1930-1993)". [4] A Bogliasco has been dedicated a bronze high relief, with the money raised by fans, players and the main protagonists Mantovani depicting the victories of the 1984-1994 period, while celebrating a cup, with the inscription "Paolo ..." . In his honor, the famous Ravano Tournament , which involves every year thousands of students belonging to the Ligurian elementary school was renamed Ravano Tournament - Mantovani Cup .

Paolo Mantovani was also a bridge lover and he was often seen in the halls of the Varazze Bridge Club.
