Mel Colchamiro è nato a Brooklyn il 15 dicembre del 1945 da una famiglia ebrea e si è trasferito nel 1950 a Valley Stream presso Long Island, ha studiato Economia presso la Hofstra University dove si è laureato nel 1967 per poi prendere un Master alla University del Maine nel 1969.

Sposatosi nel 1968 ha iniziato ha lavorare non appena laureato ed ha divorziato nel 1985.
Nel 1988 è entrato al New York Stock Exchange e nel 1993 si è risposato con Janet Colchamiro, che è una forte bridgista con la quale, prima della loro separazione, ha giocato spesso in coppia e ha preso la decisione di dedicarsi al bridge a tempo pieno.
Ha vissuto a Merrick nell'East Meadow, un centro a circa 30 Km da Manhattan.
Divenuto insegnante di bridge fin dal 1988 è stato la figura di riferimento per la formazione bridgistica nell'area di Long Island che abbraccia tre degli States più popolosi.
Come giocatore è stato un Gran Life Master della ACBL che ha vinto circa 200 Tornei Regionali e, nel 2000, anche un NABC; come amministratore è stato Presidente del 24º Distretto dal 1980 al 1982.
È anche stato un noto scrittore e contributore abituale dei Bulletin della ACBL; inoltre, ha anche pubblicato diversi articoli su The Bridge World.
Mel che nell'ultima parte della sua vita viveva con Kim Diquattro e che durante la sua vita ha avuto tre figli, ci ha lasciato il 18 febbraio del 2026.

Colchamiro was born in
Brooklyn on December 15, 1945, to a Jewish family. He moved to Valley Stream on
Long Island in 1950. He studied economics at Hofstra University, graduating in
1967, and then earned a master's degree from the University of Maine in 1969.
He married in 1968 and began working as soon as he graduated. They divorced in 1985.
In 1988, he joined the New York Stock Exchange and in 1993, he remarried Janet Colchamiro, a strong bridge player. Before their separation, he often played with her in pairs, and he chose to dedicate himself to bridge full-time.
He lived in Merrick in East Meadow, a town about 30 km from Manhattan. Having become a bridge instructor since 1988, he has been a leading figure in bridge education in the Long Island area, which encompasses three of the most populous states.
As a player, he was an ACBL Grand Life Master, winning approximately 200 Regional Tournaments and, in 2000, an NABC. As an administrator, he served as District 24 President from 1980 to 1982.
He was also a well-known writer and regular contributor to the ACBL Bulletins; he also published several articles in The Bridge World.
Mel, who lived with Kim Diquattro in the latter part of his life and who had three children during his lifetime, passed away on February 18, 2026.
