Asa  BRIGGS

 

 Asa Briggs, Barone di Lewes, nacque il 7 maggio del 1921 a Keighley dove fu educato prima presso la Keighley Boy's Grammar School e poi presso il Sidney Sussex College di Cambridge.

 Si laureò in Arte e in Economia all'Università di Londra e durante la seconda guerra mondiale fece parte del famoso Bletchley Park dove venne decrittata la macchina "Enigma" scelto dai matematici Howard Smith e Gordon Welchman con cui giocava a bridge durante gli studi universitari.

 Dopo la guerra sviluppò una luminosa carriera in campo universitario tanto da esser insignito del suo titolo baronale non ereditario.

 Sposato con Susan Anne Banwell, ebbero 4 figli.

 Presidente della Bronte Society fino al 1996, scrisse diversi libri e non ultimo produsse la storia della BBC in 5 volumi.

 Fu anche Presidente della Victorian Society fino al momento della sua scomparsa avvenuta nella sua casa di Lewes il 15 marzo del 2016.

Asa Briggs, Baron of Lewes, was born on May 7, 1921 in Keighley where he was first educated at Keighley Boy's Grammar School and later at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.

He graduated in Art and Economics at the University of London and during World War II he was part of the famous Bletchley Park where the "Enigma" machine was chosen by mathematicians Howard Smith and Gordon Welchman with whom he played bridge during his university studies.

After the war he developed a bright career in the university field so as to be awarded with his non-hereditary baronial title.

Married to Susan Anne Banwell, they had 4 children.

President of the Bronte Society until 1996, he wrote several books and not least produced the BBC story in 5 volumes.

He was also President of the Victorian Society until his death at his home in Lewes on March 15, 2016.
