Josef Blass è nato il 3 luglio del 1945 a Krasnoturinsk una città siberiana da genitori polacchi deportati ma l'anno successivo la famiglia tornò in Polonia dove completò i suoi studi a Varsavia laureandosi in matematica e prendendo un master in scienze.
Fu uno dei leader dei movimenti insurrezionali studenteschi e nel 1968 fu costretto a trasferirsi negli USA assieme alla moglie Ewa ad Ann Arbor per prendere entrambi un dottorato presso la Michigan University.
Per venti anni ha insegnato presso la Bowling Green State University fin quando non si stabilì con sua moglie a Chapel Hill una cittadina nei pressi di Durham nel cuore della Carolina del Nord.
Matematico, acquistò fama nazionale nell'ambito della stesura dei Piani Pensionistici e fama internazionale in ambito politico sostenendo per anni il movimento di solidarietà nella sua terra natia.
Fu un grande sostenitore del bridge giovanile, che imparò all'età dei 8 anni ma giocò poco prima del 2001. Ha fatto parte della ACBL Educational Foundation di cui è stato anche Presidente.
Come giocatore guadagnò il titolo di World Master e sponsorizzò per lunghi anni il campionissimo Pszczola.
Scomparve a seguito di un cancro il 2 ottobre del 2020.
Josef Blass was born on July 3, 1945 in Krasnoturinsk a Siberian city to Polish
parents who were deported but the following year the family returned to Poland
where he completed his studies in Warsaw with a degree in mathematics and a
master's in science.
He was one of the leaders of the student insurgency movements and in 1968 he was forced to move to the US with his wife Ewa in Ann Arbor to both get a doctorate from Michigan University.
For twenty years he taught at Bowling Green State University until he and his wife settled in Chapel Hill, a town near Durham in the heart of North Carolina.
Mathematician, he acquired national fame in the drafting of Pension Plans and international fame in the political field by supporting the solidarity movement in his native land for years.
He was a great supporter of youth bridge, which he learned at the age of 8 but played shortly before 2001. He was a member of the ACBL Educational Foundation of which he was also President.
As a player he earned the title of World Master and sponsored the very champion Pszczola for many years.
He passed away following cancer on October 2, 2020.
